Kolkata Metro completes Aluminium Third Rail Upgrade on Blue Line
Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a remarkable feat, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) has commenced the installation of the Third Rail system in the underground section of Corridor-1 (IIT-Naubasta) of Kanpur Metro. The pioneering work, set in motion today, involves installing the Third Rail and its associated equipment in the 'up-line' tunnel between Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj, marking a significant stride in the metro's development.
The initiation of the Third Rail installation is a pivotal moment for the Kanpur Metro, underscoring its commitment to enhancing urban transportation infrastructure. The meticulous process of lowering the Third Rail and its components into the underground Bada Chauraha station laid the groundwork for this groundbreaking endeavor.
Today's commencement witnessed the initiation of installing brackets, a crucial step in facilitating the integration of the Third Rail in the 'up-line' tunnel between Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj. This strategic move aligns with the overall progress of the Kanpur Metro, where finishing touches at all four underground stations and track construction within the Chunniganj-Nayaganj tunnel section are well underway.
The Third Rail Traction System brings a paradigm shift to the traditional means of supplying power to metro trains. Operating on 750-volt DC electricity, Kanpur Metro trains will rely on the Third Rail system laid parallel to the track, presenting a host of advantages for efficient and low-maintenance operations.
Efficient Power Supply: The Third Rail, running parallel to the track, serves as the conduit for the efficient supply of electricity required for train operations.
Low Maintenance: The system minimizes unnecessary tripping of electric supply, often caused by external factors like kite flying, resulting in a lower maintenance burden.
Aesthetic Appeal: With no visible setup of electrical wires externally, the Third Rail system preserves the aesthetic integrity of the city's infrastructure, offering a cleaner and more visually appealing solution.
Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, lauded the Metro team for the initiation of the Third Rail installation. Expressing confidence in the ongoing construction progress, he stated, "The work on all major systems, including signaling, telecom, track, and electrical, is rapidly advancing. The simultaneous progress in track construction and Third Rail installation is a testament to our commitment to timely project completion."
The initiation of the Third Rail installation signifies a monumental leap forward for the Kanpur Metro, bringing the city closer to a state-of-the-art and efficient metro transportation system.
