Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): Kanpur Metro has achieved a major operational milestone with the successful trial run of a metro train from Kanpur Central to Naubasta on the up-line of Corridor-1, marking a significant step towards the expansion of passenger services across the city.
The trial run was conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in the presence of its Managing Director, Shri Sushil Kumar, and senior project officials. During the inspection, all critical systems required for safe and reliable metro operations were thoroughly tested and successfully verified.
As part of the trial, UPMRC evaluated multiple essential systems, including:
Track alignment and ride quality
Third rail installation and power supply
750V DC traction power charging
Signaling and train control systems
The successful charging of the third rail enables metro trains to operate without overhead electric lines, ensuring smoother operations and improved safety standards.
Significant progress has been achieved on the 8-kilometre stretch between IIT Kanpur and Naubasta, which represents the final section of Corridor-1. Track laying, signaling works, and third rail installation on the up-line have now been completed, allowing trial operations to commence.
With these systems in place, Kanpur Metro has entered the final phase of testing for extending passenger services up to Naubasta. Once commissioned, this extension is expected to dramatically improve travel time, safety, and connectivity for commuters in southern Kanpur.
Construction activity on Corridor-2 (CSA to Barra-8) is also progressing steadily. Civil, electrical, and signaling works are being executed in parallel to ensure timely completion of the second corridor under the Kanpur Metro Rail Project.
The Kanpur Metro Rail Project comprises two corridors with a combined length of 32.4 km:
Corridor-1: IIT Kanpur to Naubasta (23.8 km), with 7 underground and 14 elevated stations
Corridor-2: Agriculture University to Barra-8 (8.6 km), with a mix of elevated and underground stations
The priority section of Corridor-1 between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel was inaugurated on 28 December 2021 in a record time of just over two years. Kanpur Metro also became the first metro system in Uttar Pradesh to introduce the interoperable National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).
The successful trial run to Naubasta marks a decisive step towards full commissioning of Corridor-1. With modern infrastructure, advanced safety systems, and rapid execution, Kanpur Metro continues to redefine urban mobility and supports Uttar Pradesh’s vision of developing world-class public transport systems across the state.
