Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant step toward strengthening intercity mass transit in Karnataka, the state government has approved the feasibility study for the proposed Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro extension, marking a major milestone for the long-anticipated project. The announcement was made on 29th September 2025 by Home Minister G Parameshwara during a press briefing in Tumakuru.
The study was conducted by a Hyderabad-based firm, selected through a tendering process floated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) at a cost of ₹3 crore. The firm has submitted its feasibility report to the government, and the project now moves into the Detailed Project Report (DPR) phase.
“Following the feasibility report, the government has instructed BMRCL to prepare a DPR under a public-private partnership (PPP) model,” said Parameshwara, noting that the DPR preparation has also been budgeted at ₹3 crore, as per the government order dated September 25, 2025.
First introduced in the 2024–25 Karnataka State Budget by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the project proposes to extend the Green Line of Namma Metro from Madavara—its current northern terminus—to Tumakuru, a fast-growing city 70 km northwest of Bengaluru.
The proposed extension will:
Span 59.6 km
Connect Madavara to Tumakuru city
Cost an estimated ₹20,649 crore in its first phase
Be developed under a PPP model, with multiple private sector companies expressing interest
This extension will integrate Tumakuru into the Namma Metro network, providing a rapid, reliable alternative to road travel and easing pressure on the National Highway 48, which is often congested during peak hours.
“This project could redefine regional connectivity in Karnataka. A metro link between Bengaluru and Tumakuru is not just about easing travel—it’s about enabling equitable growth across urban and semi-urban clusters,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “The feasibility study and forthcoming DPR signal the government’s intent to expand Namma Metro’s footprint as a regional mobility engine.”
Once completed, the Tumakuru extension will join Bengaluru’s growing metro network, which currently includes:
Green Line: 33.46 km (northwest-south connectivity)
Purple Line: 43.5 km (Whitefield to Challaghatta)
Yellow Line: 18.8 km (Bommasandra to RV Road, via Electronic City – nearing commissioning)
The Green Line extension to Tumakuru will also act as a catalyst for economic activity, supporting industries, logistics, education institutions, and residential hubs emerging along the corridor.
With the feasibility report in hand and DPR preparation underway, the project now awaits further approvals for funding, land acquisition, and alignment finalization. If cleared promptly, construction could begin within the next two to three years, paving the way for Karnataka’s first intercity metro rail extension.
The Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro extension is poised to transform regional connectivity, promote sustainable mobility, and set a precedent for future intercity metro corridors in India. As the DPR progresses, all eyes will be on how Karnataka leverages the PPP model to deliver this ambitious, forward-looking project
