Bhopal, India (Metro Rail Today): In a key step toward launching a metro rail link between Ujjain and Indore, the Madhya Pradesh government has approved a consultancy fee of ₹9 lakh per kilometre for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the ambitious regional rapid transit corridor.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Bhopal on Tuesday, according to official sources.
The DPR will be prepared in two phases:
Phase 1: From Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain to Lavkush Chauraha, Indore
Phase 2: From Lavkush Chauraha to Pithampur, a major industrial hub near Indore
The proposed corridor is expected to not only strengthen inter-city mobility but also boost religious tourism, employment access, and economic activity between the historical city of Ujjain and the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, Indore.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), India’s most experienced urban rail planning and execution agency, will spearhead the DPR preparation process. Known for its track record in executing metro and RRTS projects across India and abroad, DMRC’s appointment lends technical credibility and ensures that the project is aligned with modern rapid transit standards.
The consultancy rate of ₹9 lakh per km is in line with standard DPR preparation costs for regional transit corridors and includes alignment planning, ridership assessment, feasibility, costing, land acquisition studies, and environmental considerations.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, welcomed the decision, “The Ujjain–Indore metro project is a visionary step that connects spirituality, commerce, and industry. Appointing DMRC ensures that global best practices will inform the planning. A regional rail link of this nature will catalyze integrated growth and set the tone for future inter-city transit development in central India.”
The proposed Ujjain–Indore MRTS corridor will mark the first intercity metro or RRTS-like system in Madhya Pradesh. It is likely to be modeled on the Delhi–Meerut RRTS, allowing semi-high-speed travel with multiple interchange hubs, catering to daily commuters, tourists, and industrial workers alike.
This also aligns with the state’s long-term vision to develop a connected transport grid across key cities, enabling sustainable mobility, reducing road congestion, and supporting green infrastructure goals under India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative.
