Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major step toward expanding Pune’s metro network, the Maharashtra government has approved a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Pune Metro Phase 2 extensions — from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi (Vitthalwadi) (Corridor 2B). The agreement defines the financial and operational framework for all stakeholders and authorizes Maha-Metro to fund the project through Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), additional FSI, and the development of government land.
The MoU, cleared by the state cabinet on October 28, 2025, has been forwarded to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for final approval.
Total length: 12.75 km (fully elevated)
Corridors:
Corridor 2A: Vanaz–Chandani Chowk
Corridor 2B: Ramwadi–Wagholi (Vitthalwadi)
Stations: 13 new elevated stations
Estimated cost: ₹3,626.24 crore
Funding: Jointly supported by the Central and State governments
Execution agency: Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro)
Any expenditure exceeding the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR) will require prior clearance from the State Finance Department. Additional project costs, if incurred, will be met through Maha-Metro’s Dedicated Urban Transport Fund, officials confirmed.
Atul Gadgil, Director (Works), Maha-Metro, said:
“Signing the tri-party agreement is an important step. The state government has approved the MoU and forwarded it to the central government for final approval. Once we receive the Centre’s nod, we will move to the next phase — raising funds and appointing consultants.”
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, lauded the development, stating:
“The Pune Metro Phase 2 extensions represent another significant leap in Maharashtra’s urban transport transformation. Leveraging innovative funding models like TOD and FSI ensures financial sustainability while enhancing last-mile connectivity. This expansion will not only ease urban congestion but also boost economic activity along the new corridors — a perfect example of India’s vision for integrated, sustainable mobility under Viksit Bharat 2047.”
Pune Metro’s Phase 1, fully operational since September 2024, spans 33.28 km with 31 stations, connecting PCMC to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi. Work is already underway on two other extensions — PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj — adding more than 9 km to the city’s network.
Once Phase 2 is completed, the Pune Metro will cover over 55 km, offering seamless and eco-friendly connectivity across the city’s fast-growing residential, commercial, and IT zones.
