Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): As the Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line) gears up for full operationalisation, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has initiated formal steps to expand the city’s underground metro network with a new corridor—Green Line-11.
The MMRCL has submitted a detailed project proposal (DPR) for the 17.5 km underground Line-11, stretching from Anik Depot to Gateway of India, to the Maharashtra government for initial approval. Once the state nod is secured, the proposal will be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for final clearance.
The proposed Line-11 will traverse some of the densest urban zones in South Mumbai, including key areas such as Nagpada and Bhendi Bazaar. Out of the 13 planned stations, 12 will be underground, with only one being at-grade. The alignment is expected to offer seamless metro connectivity to South Mumbai, an area currently underserved by high-capacity public transit.
According to MMRCL, eight stations will be constructed using the cut-and-cover method, while the remaining five stations will adopt the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) to ensure stability and minimize surface disruption.
A dedicated depot for Line-11 has been proposed at the Anik–Pratiksha Nagar BEST bus depot, covering 16 hectares of land. The integration of metro operations with existing BEST bus infrastructure aims to enhance multi-modal connectivity and last-mile access for commuters.
The new corridor will deploy six-coach trains, likely equipped with modern CBTC signaling systems, optimized for high-frequency, safe, and energy-efficient operations.
MMRCL’s ridership projections indicate a strong demand for Line-11:
5.8 lakh (580,000) daily riders by 2031
8.69 lakh (869,000) daily riders by 2041
This corridor is expected to decongest Mumbai’s southern peninsula, offering faster, underground access to business districts and heritage zones while complementing the soon-to-be-operational Aqua Line-3.
A senior MMRCL official stated, “We’ve submitted the proposal to the state for initial clearance. Once approved, it will move to the Centre’s Urban Development Department. The process includes detailed assessments of the feasibility report and DPR by the respective authorities.”
The proposed Mumbai Metro Green Line-11 represents a crucial expansion of Mumbai’s high-capacity underground metro network. By connecting the eastern suburbs to South Mumbai, the corridor promises to offer sustainable, high-frequency public transport in one of the city’s most congested corridors—marking another important milestone in Mumbai’s mass transit transformation.
