Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): Mumbai's much-anticipated first underground Metro, Aqua Line 3, covering a substantial 33.5 km network, is now projected to miss its 2023 deadline. The entirety of this transformative project is anticipated to be commissioned within the year 2024.
The initial deadline for the first phase- Bandra to Seepz was December 2021 and the second phase- BKC to Colaba was June 2022 for the first underground metro in Mumbai – Mumbai Metro Line 3
While significant strides have been made on Phase 1 between Aarey and Bandra Kurla Complex, scheduled for completion in December, the opening for public use is expected in early 2024. The completion involves extensive trials and testing to ensure the system's safety and efficiency.
Simultaneously, efforts to expedite work on Phase 2, connecting BKC to Colaba, are underway. This phase is also targeted for commissioning within 2024, culminating in the operation of the entire 33.5-km-long stretch.
MMRCL officials report that 86% of the Aqua Line's work, encompassing both phases, is already complete. Phase 1, from Aarey to BKC, stands at an impressive 93% completion, with nearly 99% of the civil work done. The focus now shifts to setting up crucial systems such as ventilation, lifts, escalators, and entry/exits, currently at 70% completion.
Upon completing the works by December 2024, the project will enter a phase of full train trials, followed by assessments by the research and development arm of Indian Railways (RDSO). Integrated trials and safety certifications by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety will follow. Only after obtaining these certifications can Phase 1 be publicly commissioned.
Phase 2, covering the stretch between BKC and Colaba, faces unique challenges, particularly in densely populated areas such as Girgaum, Kalbadevi, Prabhadevi, and Dadar. Innovative construction methods, including the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) technology, have been employed to overcome hurdles. The work on Phase 2 is reported to be 80% complete, and the completion is expected within 2024.
The Aqua Line, also known as Line 3, is Mumbai's first underground metro line, designed to ease road congestion and alleviate the load on the Western Line between Bandra and Churchgate. The ambitious project boasts 27 underground stations and one at-grade station, connecting Navy Nagar in the far south to Aarey Depot in the north center. It includes crucial connections to other metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and Mumbai's International Airport.
The estimated cost of the Aqua Line project is ₹30,000 crore (US$3.8 billion), funded by major groups including MMRCL, Padeco, MMRDA, CREC, and JICA. JICA has provided a substantial soft loan of ₹13,235 crore (US$1.7 billion).
The project includes a 170-meter twin-tunnel passing under the Mithi River, marking a significant engineering achievement. This underlines its importance as the second under-river metro rail tunnel in India.
Despite facing challenges from environmentalists and activists filing PILs over tree cutting and protests in Aarey over the metro carshed construction, the project has received judicial backing from both the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court, emphasizing its significance for the city's infrastructure.
As Mumbai eagerly awaits the completion of Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), the evolving timeline emphasizes the meticulous approach taken to ensure the safety and efficiency of this groundbreaking metro project.
