Nagpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a moment of pride for India’s infrastructure landscape, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha Metro) has earned a prestigious Guinness World Record for constructing the world’s longest double-decker viaduct. The engineering marvel, stretching 5.626 km along Kamptee Road in Nagpur, has been internationally recognized as a benchmark in metro and multimodal transport design.
Announcing the accolade on social media, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded the achievement as a symbol of Nagpur’s growing stature in modern mobility. “This world-class structure, built on single-column piers and housing five metro stations, is a proud milestone for Nagpur, Maharashtra, and India's infrastructure ambitions,” he posted. He also credited the visionary guidance of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enabling such transformative projects.
The certification ceremony was held at Ramgiri, the official residence of the Chief Minister, where Swapnil Dangirikar, official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, presented the certificate to Maha Metro MD, Mr. Shravan Hardikar, in the presence of the Chief Minister and senior dignitaries.
Constructed using advanced rib and spine technology, the viaduct exemplifies cutting-edge engineering. It has been designed as a four-tier structure—an innovation in Indian infrastructure. The ground level supports an existing highway, the first deck accommodates a national highway, while the second deck is dedicated to the Nagpur Metro’s Aqua Line. Above all this, the structure is supported on single-column piers, significantly minimizing land use and visual clutter.
Along the viaduct, five metro stations—Gaddi Godam, Kadbi Square, Indora Square, Nari Road, and Automotive Square—have been integrated into the elevated alignment. One of the project’s most technically demanding accomplishments occurred near Gaddi Godam, where engineers executed India’s first-ever 1,650-ton capacity launch in a dense urban setting. This milestone required precise coordination with Indian Railways, including a rare 24-hour block, to manage road and rail traffic simultaneously.
The viaduct was previously inaugurated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on October 5, 2024, and has since delivered tangible benefits to commuters, including reduced traffic congestion, shorter travel times, and lower fuel consumption. Its construction also avoided large-scale land acquisition and resettlement, thanks to its space-efficient design—saving costs and accelerating project delivery.
This is Maha Metro’s second Guinness World Record. The first was awarded in December 2022 for its 3.14 km double-decker viaduct on Wardha Road, which includes the Ujjwal Nagar, Jayprakash Nagar, and Chhatrapati Square stations. With nearly 9 km of double-decker viaducts now operational in Nagpur, the city stands as a national and global pioneer in integrated metro infrastructure.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, congratulated Maha Metro on this milestone, saying, “The Kamptee Road viaduct is not just a record-setting structure, but a blueprint for future-ready urban mobility. It embodies innovation, efficiency, and smart engineering. Maha Metro’s achievement places India firmly on the global infrastructure map.”
As India accelerates its journey toward sustainable and multimodal transport systems, the recognition of Nagpur’s double-decker viaduct as a world-record holder underscores the country’s growing capability in delivering complex, future-proof infrastructure.
