Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recently awarded a significant contract to Panasonic Manufacturing (Beijing) Co., Ltd. for the installation of Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) on two key corridors of the Chennai Metro Phase-2 project. This contract represents a major step forward in enhancing safety and efficiency within the metro network.

The contract involves the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of Platform Screen Doors for Corridor 3, which runs from Madhavaram Depot to Tharamani Metro, and Corridor 5, which extends from Kolathur Junction Metro to Villivakkam MTH Road Metro. The work is expected to be completed within 1465 days, with a total awarded value of ₹87,36,03,003/- (₹87.36 crore).

Scope of Work

The scope of the contract includes several critical components to ensure the successful installation of the PSD systems. Panasonic will provide full-height Platform Screen Doors tailored for 3-car trains. Each platform will feature approximately 70 meters of PSD, designed to improve safety by providing a barrier between the platform and the tracks.

Each platform will also be equipped with 12 sets of bi-parting sliding doors, complete with drive mechanisms and electric motors to ensure smooth and reliable operation while facilitating easy passenger flow. The contractor will be responsible for supplying all necessary mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment, including integrated manual control panels for the PSD systems.

Control equipment for the PSD system’s circuitry will be installed in designated equipment rooms to ensure reliable operation and integration with existing metro systems. The contract also covers the supply of concrete or metallic bases, pedestals, anchor fasteners, and supports necessary for the secure installation of the PSD systems.

All required cables, including optical fibre cables, terminations, protection pipes, and accessories, will be provided to ensure full connectivity and functionality of the PSD systems. Additionally, workstations, servers, and maintenance and diagnostic software for various control centers, including the System Control Room (SCR), Operational Control Center (OCC), and Backup OCC (BOCC), will be supplied, installed, and commissioned.

Efficient cable management will be implemented through the provision of spur cable containments, trays under false flooring inside equipment rooms, control rooms, track crossing pipes, and concealed conduits. The contract also includes providing all necessary equipment and interfaces to meet safety standards and performance requirements, including temporary safety arrangements during different stages of the project.

The provision of special test equipment, tools, keys, maintenance utilities, and spare parts for the testing and commissioning period, as well as the Defect Liability Period (DLP) and warranty period, is also included in the scope of work.

Enhancing Passenger Safety and Efficiency

The integration of Platform Screen Doors is a vital element of the Chennai Metro Phase-2 project, aimed at improving passenger safety and operational efficiency. By incorporating advanced PSD systems, the project seeks to create a modernized metro network that offers enhanced safety features and a superior commuter experience.

The detailed scope of the contract ensures that all aspects of the PSD installation, from design and manufacture to maintenance and safety, are thoroughly addressed. This approach reflects a commitment to delivering a high-quality metro system that meets the needs of Chennai's expanding urban population.

Panasonic’s successful bid for the Platform Screen Doors installation contract marks a significant advancement in Chennai’s metro expansion efforts. The implementation of these systems will play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and efficiency of the Chennai Metro Phase-2 project. As the work progresses, the focus on high standards of quality and reliability will contribute to an improved transportation experience for Chennai’s commuters.
