Pune Metro Rail Project Marks 8 Years of Transformative Connectivity

Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) is celebrating the 8th Foundation Day of the Pune Metro Rail Project, a significant milestone in its journey towards revolutionizing urban transportation. Established as a 50:50 Joint Venture between the Government Of Maharashtra and the Government of India, the project plays a crucial role in executing Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) Projects across Maharashtra, excluding the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The Pune Metro Rail Project (PMRP) received official sanction on December 23, 2016, and underwent reconstitution as the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) on January 23, 2017. Since then, it has been dedicated to enhancing urban mobility, fostering economic growth, and providing efficient transportation solutions to the city of Pune.

Pune Metro, a mass rapid transit system serving the city, currently comprises three lines with a combined length of 54.14 km. As of August 2023, two lines covering 21.75 km are operational. The system includes the Purple Line from PCMC Bhavan to Swargate, running on an elevated viaduct and going underground; and the Aqua Line from Vanaz to Ramwadi, covering 14.66 km on an elevated viaduct. The upcoming Line 3, spanning 23.33 km, will connect Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi to Civil Court.

The foundation stone for the Purple and Aqua lines was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2016, with MahaMetro, a joint venture of the state and central governments, overseeing their implementation. Inaugurated in March 2022, additional sections on both lines became operational in August 2023. Line 3, a joint venture of Tata Realty and IRB on a public–private partnership basis, had its foundation stone laid in December 2018.

Looking ahead, Pune Metro has initiated preparations for the second phase of the metro, with approved routes including Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar metro rail route (25.862 km), Paudphata to Manikbaug via Warje route (6.118 km), Vanaz to Chandni Chowk route (1.112 km), and Ramwadi to Wagholi route (11.633 km). The Detailed Project Report is now awaiting approval from the state and central governments.

As the Pune Metro Rail Project marks eight years, it stands as a testament to its commitment towards advancing public transportation, reducing congestion, and contributing to the sustainable development of Pune. The celebration underscores the transformative impact the metro has had on connectivity, economic development, and the overall quality of life in the city. Congratulations to Maha Metro and all stakeholders involved in this remarkable journey.
