Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major development for Pune’s urban transport infrastructure, Union Minister and Pune MP Muralidhar Mohol has announced that the Pune Metro will soon be directly connected to Pune International Airport. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been instructed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed extension from Kharadi to the airport, which will form part of the larger Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi metro corridor.
The new stretch aims to boost accessibility to the airport and streamline commuting options for residents across the Pune Metropolitan Region. Speaking on the initiative, Minister Mohol stated, “The metro route from Khadakwasla to Kharadi was discussed in detail with Maha Metro officials. We also consulted representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Since airport connectivity falls within the joint jurisdiction of Maha Metro and PMC, the Corporation will fund and initiate the DPR preparation.”
Highlighting the strategic significance of Kharadi, Mohol emphasized its potential as an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. “Kharadi is witnessing rapid commercial and residential growth. Developing it as a metro hub will ensure seamless access to the Pune Airport from all corners of the city,” he shared on social media platform X.
The minister further confirmed that all four existing metro corridors in Pune—including Nigdi to Swargate, Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, and Vanaz to Ramwadi—will be integrated into this airport connectivity plan. Once complete, residents from Pimpri-Chinchwad and other parts of Pune district will have direct metro access to Lohegaon Airport, improving ease of travel and reducing traffic bottlenecks.
Mohol also proposed a new metro line connecting Katraj to Hinjewadi, adding another dimension to Pune’s growing rapid transit network.
On the much-awaited Purandar International Airport project, the minister noted that land acquisition is actively underway. “The state government, through MIDC, is carrying out land acquisition for the new airport. Sub-divisional officers have been appointed for each village, and notifications have been issued. Work on the project will commence soon,” he said.
These developments signal a transformative phase for Pune’s transport ecosystem, promising faster, integrated, and more sustainable urban mobility in the years to come.
