RTA set to open $4.9 billion Dubai Metro Blue Line this year

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the commencement of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project this year, a groundbreaking initiative set to transform the northeastern part of the city. With an estimated cost of Dh18 billion ($4.9 billion), the project is poised to feature 14 stations and extend the Metro network by an impressive 30km, over half of which will be located underground.

Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general of the RTA, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This year will witness the start of implementation of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project.” He highlighted the project's importance, noting that it would serve vital areas, with an anticipated population of approximately one million according to the Dubai Urban Plan 2040. Moreover, it aims to enhance connectivity and integration with the existing Red and Green Lines.

The Metro system played a pivotal role in the city's mass transit, shared transport, and taxi services, contributing to 37% of the total usage last year, as revealed by Mr. Al Tayer.

According to the RTA, the combined ridership of public transport and shared mobility, encompassing the Dubai Metro, tram, buses, marine transport, and taxis, witnessed a substantial increase. In 2023, the total ridership reached about 702 million, marking a 13% surge from the 2022 figure of 621.4 million. Notably, the average daily ridership across these modes of transport rose to 1.92 million, up from 1.7 million in the previous year.

The Dubai Metro Blue Line will strategically connect five principal urban regions of Dubai, fostering better accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors alike. These regions include Bur Dubai and Deira, Downtown and Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina and JBR, and Expo City Dubai. Several new stations are planned, including Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City.

Projections indicate that the Blue Line is expected to cater to 200,000 passengers daily by 2030, and this number is anticipated to rise to 320,000 by the end of the following decade.

Upon completion, the Dubai Metro will boast an impressive length of 131km, incorporating 78 stations and served by 168 trains. The Blue Line project is scheduled for completion in 2029, aligning with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro's inauguration.

The Dubai Metro Blue Line project is a monumental step towards enhancing the city's transportation infrastructure and addressing the growing needs of its expanding population. The strategic connectivity, increased ridership, and forward-looking approach underscore the city's commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation.
