Abu Dhabi, UAE (Metro Rail Today): In a landmark announcement during Global Rail 2025, Abu Dhabi Transport unveiled two major initiatives that mark a significant leap toward developing a modern, integrated, and sustainable transport network: the Urban Loop personal rapid transit system and the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project. Both projects reflect the emirate's ambitious goals to promote green mobility, reduce congestion, and enhance urban connectivity.
The Urban Loop—a futuristic, self-driving autonomous transit system—will enter its pilot phase within six months at two locations on Al Reem Island. Operating 24/7, the system is designed to seamlessly integrate with Abu Dhabi’s existing bus and smart mobility networks.
Built to withstand the region’s unique climate, each Urban Loop unit is equipped with advanced cooling systems and dust protection, making it energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. This project is a cornerstone in Abu Dhabi’s commitment to climate neutrality and innovation in mobility.
“The Urban Loop represents a shift in how cities approach short-distance, on-demand travel,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “By blending autonomous technology with sustainability, Abu Dhabi is setting new benchmarks for urban transit in the Middle East and beyond.”
Simultaneously, Abu Dhabi Transport announced the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project, a transformative rail-based system designed to offer a viable and sustainable alternative to private vehicles. The first phase, scheduled to begin construction in 2026 and complete by 2030, will connect:
Al Raha Beach
Abu Dhabi International Airport
Etihad Plaza
Southern Yas Island, including Yas Mall and SeaWorld
This corridor will link key residential communities, commercial zones, and major tourist destinations, enabling fast, efficient, and low-emission travel across the emirate. The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions, and support urban regeneration and economic development.
“The Light Rail initiative will reimagine how residents and visitors move across Abu Dhabi,” added a senior transport official. “It is not just about building rail infrastructure, but about shaping a smart, livable city for future generations.”
Both projects form part of Abu Dhabi's broader strategy to build a multi-modal, future-ready transport ecosystem, aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals and national mobility vision. By integrating smart technologies, sustainable practices, and passenger-centric design, the emirate is well on its way to becoming a global leader in clean and connected transportation.
The announcement was met with international interest during Global Rail 2025, positioning Abu Dhabi as a trailblazer in the global transition to sustainable urban mobility.
With the Urban Loop entering pilot operations and the Light Rail project advancing toward implementation, Abu Dhabi is taking bold strides to redefine urban transport. These projects are not only infrastructure upgrades—they are symbols of the emirate’s commitment to climate action, urban innovation, and world-class quality of life.
