Sydney to have 113 km of new metro rail network by 2030

Sydney, Australia (Metro Rail Today): In a groundbreaking initiative set to reshape Sydney's transportation infrastructure, the Sydney Metro is poised to become Australia's largest public transport project by 2030. With plans to introduce four metro lines, 46 stations, and 113 km of new metro rail, the project aims to redefine the way the country's most populous city commutes.

One pivotal segment of this ambitious undertaking is the Chatswood to Sydenham section, covering a 15.5 km stretch predominantly composed of underground rail tunnels, including a path beneath the iconic Sydney Harbour. The project encompasses the development of new stations at strategic locations, including Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street, Waterloo, and new underground platforms at Central.

Another significant facet of the Sydney Metro initiative involves upgrading the T3 Bankstown Line between Sydenham and Bankstown to meet metro standards. With planning approval received in December 2018, this development promises commuters a new fully air-conditioned Sydney Metro train arriving every 4 minutes during peak hours. The upgraded stations will feature lifts, level platforms, and platform screen doors, enhancing safety, accessibility, and security.

Key Project Features:-

  • Air-conditioned metro trains every 4 minutes during peak hours
  • Fully accessible stations with lifts for enhanced mobility
  • Upgraded security measures, including CCTV surveillance and platform screen doors
  • New or improved concourses and station entries
  • Seamless interchanges between stations, reducing waiting times
  • Direct services to key locations, including Martin Place, Barangaroo, North Sydney, Chatswood, and Macquarie Park

Interconnected Network

The Sydney Metro initiative doesn't stop here. Two additional lines are currently under construction, further solidifying its impact on Sydney's transportation landscape.

Western Sydney Airport Project

A 23 km line from St Marys to the new Aerotropolis station in Badgerys Creek is in progress. With six stations along the route, this line will serve the Western Sydney International Airport, slated to open in 2026.

Sydney Metro West

Stretching approximately 24 km from Westmead to Hunter Street in Sydney CBD, this line, comprising nine stations with underground twin tracks, is set to open in 2030. It will provide essential connections to Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park.

The Sydney Metro project signifies more than just an expansion of the city's public transport system; it represents a bold leap into the future of urban mobility. With enhanced accessibility, improved safety features, and efficient connections, Sydney is gearing up to set new standards in public transportation. As we look forward to 2030, the completion of this transformative initiative will undoubtedly redefine how Sydneysiders navigate their city.
