Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride for the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) named 'Vidyarthi' and 'Tatya' have achieved a crucial milestone as they commenced their Main Drive today. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the construction of the underground sections under Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta), focusing on the 'Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar' and 'Chunniganj-Nayaganj' segments.
The 'Vidyarthi' TBM is actively involved in constructing the 'Downline' tunnel, extending from Kanpur Central towards Nayaganj. On the other hand, the 'Tatya' TBM is dedicated to crafting the 'Downline' tunnel, stretching from McRobertganj towards Chunniganj.
This intricate tunnel construction process involves two key phases: the Initial Drive and the Main Drive. Before the Main Drive initiation, the Backup System Unit of the TBM is meticulously lowered into the shaft and connected to the TBM Shield. This critical unit serves as the control room, housing all essential auxiliary systems required for the tunneling operation.
Currently, 'Vidyarthi' TBM is making strides along a 1,250-meter stretch from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj, having completed an impressive 90 meters during its Initial Drive. Meanwhile, 'Tatya' TBM is diligently constructing a 414-meter tunnel from McRobertganj to Chunniganj.
The Backup System Unit, now strategically positioned in an 18-meter-deep shaft, plays a pivotal role in kickstarting the Main Drive. During this phase, the loco pilot becomes instrumental in facilitating the excavation process, with a motorized trolley ensuring the smooth transportation of ring segments and efficient soil clearance post-mining.
As part of the broader Corridor-1, spanning a total of 23.78 km from IIT to Naubasta, the Kanpur Metro Rail Project has already achieved operational commercial services on the 9 km Priority Corridor (IIT-Motijheel). Beyond the underground sections, construction progress is rapidly advancing in the approximately 5 km Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section.
This milestone moment not only propels the ambitious Kanpur Metro Rail Project forward but also contributes significantly to the city's expanding metro network, promising enhanced connectivity and convenience for its residents. Stay tuned as 'Vidyarthi' and 'Tatya' continue their journey, shaping the future of Kanpur's transportation landscape.
