Telangana Govt approves ₹24,269 crores for 116.4 km Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 Project

Hyderabad, India (Metro Rail Today): The Telangana government has officially sanctioned an ambitious 116.4 km expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project as part of Phase 2. This significant infrastructure development was confirmed in orders issued on Saturday by M. Dana Kishore, Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development.

Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail will be divided into two main parts:

  • Part A: Comprising six corridors with a total length of 76.4 km, this segment is projected to cost approximately ₹24,269 crore.

  • Part B: Featuring one corridor extending 40 km, the financial details for this segment are currently under review.

The project is being executed as a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) between the Telangana state government and the Union government. Funding will be sourced from multiple channels: the state will contribute ₹7,313 crore (30% of the total cost), the central government will allocate ₹4,230 crore (18%), while loans from international institutions such as JICA, ADB, and NDB will cover ₹11,693 crore (48%). An additional ₹1,033 crore (4%) will be raised through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

Key Corridors and Features

Among the identified corridors, particular attention is being given to Corridor 9, which will connect Shamshabad RGIA to Fourth City. Detailed alignments and cost estimates for this 40 km corridor are currently being developed, with field surveys actively underway.

The remaining five corridors in Part A are designed to enhance connectivity across Hyderabad, addressing the growing demand for efficient public transport. The government emphasizes that the updated plans for Phase 2 are informed by extensive traffic studies and consultations, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of the city's residents.

Goals and Objectives

The Telangana government's initiative to expand the metro system aims to foster equitable growth and improve urban mobility across different socio-economic sectors. The revised proposals reflect lessons learned from the Phase 1 experience, striving to enhance the overall public transport experience for citizens.

As the city continues to grow, the expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail is expected to play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion, promoting sustainable transportation, and contributing to the region's economic development. The government remains committed to rolling out this project in a timely manner, enhancing Hyderabad's status as a modern urban center.

The approval of Phase 2 for the Hyderabad Metro Rail marks a significant step forward for the city’s infrastructure. With a comprehensive plan to extend metro connectivity by 116.4 km, Hyderabad is poised for transformative growth, making public transport more accessible and efficient for its residents. Further updates on the project's progress will be closely monitored as the government moves ahead with implementation.
