Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Rail & Metro Today): Parsons, in partnership with Systra and Egis through the Riyadh Metro Transit Consultants (RMTC) joint venture, has been selected to provide project and construction management (PMCM) services for the Riyadh Metro Red Line Extension in Saudi Arabia. The multi-year assignment has been awarded by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) and represents new work for Parsons.
The appointment marks another significant milestone in the expansion of Riyadh's public transport network, which is a key component of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 programme. The Red Line extension is expected to improve connectivity between the capital's existing metro network and the historic Diriyah development area.
Pierre Santoni, President, Infrastructure EMEA at Parsons, said the company was honoured to continue its involvement in the Riyadh Metro programme. He highlighted the project's role in transforming urban mobility and improving quality of life in the Kingdom's capital.
As a long-term partner of RCRC and lead consultant for the delivery of the existing Riyadh Metro system, Parsons will draw on its international project management experience and regional expertise to support the successful delivery of the extension and future phases.
The Riyadh Metro Red Line Extension will begin at the existing King Saud University (KSU) terminus and extend towards Diriyah South. The 8.4-km corridor will comprise approximately 1.3 km of elevated alignment and 7.1 km of underground sections.
The project includes five new stations, comprising two elevated and three underground stations. Once completed, the extension will connect Diriyah with Riyadh's wider public transport network, improving access to one of the Kingdom's important cultural, heritage and tourism destinations.
The new infrastructure is expected to help reduce road congestion, shorten commuting times and encourage greater use of public transport. It will also support more sustainable urban mobility as Riyadh continues to expand.
The RMTC joint venture began working on the Riyadh Metro programme in 2013 and was involved in delivering its first phase, which included the Blue, Red and Orange lines. The latest appointment builds on this long-standing relationship with RCRC and extends the consortium's involvement into the next stage of network development.
Parsons brings extensive experience in rail and transit infrastructure, having delivered projects in more than 50 countries. The company has also been involved in major rail projects across the Gulf region and has maintained a presence in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) for more than 65 years.
Its expertise spans project and programme management, urban development, rail and metro systems, aviation, roads, ports, smart mobility, asset management and master planning.
The Red Line extension is part of Riyadh's broader strategy to develop an integrated, high-capacity public transport system and reduce dependence on private vehicles. By improving connectivity to Diriyah and other key urban destinations, the project is expected to contribute to the city's economic development, tourism growth and quality-of-life objectives.
The appointment of RMTC for PMCM services highlights the importance of experienced international engineering and project management partners in delivering complex urban rail expansions. As Riyadh advances its transport infrastructure programme, the Red Line extension will be an important addition to the city's growing metro network.
