Ahmedabad, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Ltd has officially announced that the trial run for Phase II of the Ahmedabad Metro, spanning 20 kilometers from Motera to Gandhinagar, is set to commence in March. This eagerly awaited trial will cover the stretch from Motera to Sector-I in Gandhinagar, passing through the iconic GIFT City. According to metro officials, the entire route, extending up to Mahatma Mandir, is expected to be operational by the year's end.
GMRC revealed that the trials are tentatively scheduled to kick off in either March or April. However, there is a sense of urgency, as officials emphasize that the trial run must commence by mid-March. The looming implementation of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha election serves as the driving force behind this urgency. An official stated, "Once the election dates are out, the window for the trial run will close, necessitating completion before the election period." Post-election, passenger service is poised to reach Gandhinagar Sector I, with full operation across the entire route anticipated by year-end.
Significant progress has been achieved on the cable-stayed extra-dosed bridge, a prominent feature on the route, spanning the Narmada main canal between Narendra Modi Stadium and Gandhinagar. With a central span of 145 meters and end spans of 79 meters, flanked by two 28.1-meter-high pylons, the bridge is nearing completion. Remarkably, the construction of the pylons and 100 out of 105 segments has been expedited, indicating that the bridge will be ready for track laying and third rail installation shortly. Officials assert that the Thaltej to Thaltej Gam stretch will also be finalized by the end of the year. Additionally, plans are underway to inaugurate the Sabarmati metro station post-election.
As the GMRC gears up for the Phase II trials of the Ahmedabad Metro, the anticipation among residents and commuters is palpable. The rapid progress on key infrastructural components, including the cable-stayed bridge and metro station construction, signals a promising future for efficient connectivity in the region. With a commitment to completing major segments by the year's end, the Ahmedabad Metro Phase II project stands as a testament to Gujarat's dedication to modernized and sustainable public transportation.
