Lucknow, India (Metro Rail Today): The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL) has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop a massive 1,575 km Metro rail network across the state by 2047, marking one of the most extensive urban mobility expansion strategies ever proposed in India. The long-term vision—aligned with the national goal of Viksit Bharat@2047—was presented by UPMRCL Managing Director Sushil Kumar during the “Viksit Uttar Pradesh for Viksit Bharat@2047” seminar.
The blueprint begins with substantial scale-ups in the three cities already operating Metro services. Lucknow is set to grow to 225 km, Kanpur to 200 km and Agra to 100 km, positioning them among India’s largest planned Metro networks. These expansions aim to address rising commuter demand and support economic and residential growth in the state’s major urban centres.
Beyond the existing systems, the proposal includes the development of 150 km networks each in Noida–Greater Noida, Varanasi and Prayagraj—cities witnessing rapid urban transformation. Additionally, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya and Meerut are each slated for 50 km networks, ensuring that Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities also receive high-quality rapid transit systems.
Officials noted that nearly half of the proposed network—about 790 km—is targeted for completion by 2035, representing a significant acceleration in Uttar Pradesh’s rapid transit rollout.
Detailing the financial blueprint, UPMRCL MD Sushil Kumar emphasised that the project’s initial 525 km phase is economically feasible, with the state government’s annual share estimated at just ₹1,040 crore. He highlighted UPMRCL’s track record of “proven efficiency” in delivering Metro projects within time and budget, noting that this experience will be critical in executing such an extensive, multi-city development programme.
Offering an industry perspective, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “A 1,575 km Metro vision is transformative not just for Uttar Pradesh, but for India’s wider mobility landscape. Integrated rapid transit across major and emerging cities will drive economic opportunities, reduce congestion and shape more sustainable, future-ready urban societies.”
This expansion stands to redefine daily commuting for millions, reduce road congestion and significantly improve connectivity between major commercial, residential and industrial zones. The vision aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s rapid urbanisation trends and aims to support the state’s growing role as a key economic engine of the country.
As planning progresses, the ambitious 1,575 km Metro blueprint positions Uttar Pradesh to become one of India’s most extensively connected states through mass rapid transit—ushering in a new era of mobility, development and urban prosperity.
