100% Precast work completed for viaduct of Chennai Metro Corridor 4

Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a remarkable engineering achievement, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has completed 100% of precast works at the Voyalanallur Casting Yard for the Porur–Powerhouse section of Corridor-4 under the Phase II Chennai Metro project.

The milestone marks the successful casting of the final U-Girder for the 4 km double-decker viaduct — one of the most technically complex and structurally demanding sections of the city’s expanding metro network.

A total of 3,410 precast elements were produced, encompassing 25 types of prestressed members (both pre-tensioned and post-tensioned), including U-Girders, I-Girders, Pier Caps, Pier Arms and Parapets.

These elements were fabricated for nine metro stations and 8 km of viaduct, which includes the landmark 4 km double-decker section accommodating both metro and flyover decks.

This extraordinary effort involved approximately - 1,22,137 cubic metres of concrete, 18,470 metric tonnes of reinforcement steel, and 2,42,455 metric tonnes of total precast weight.

The entire operation was executed without any major safety incident, reflecting CMRL’s strong commitment to safety, precision, and project management excellence.

Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, and Managing Editor of Metro Rail Today, congratulated the Chennai Metro team on this accomplishment, stating:

“The completion of 100% precast works on Corridor-4 is a landmark in India’s metro construction journey. Chennai Metro continues to demonstrate world-class engineering capability, safety discipline, and execution excellence. This milestone not only accelerates Chennai’s Phase II progress but also sets a benchmark for sustainable and innovative urban transport infrastructure under the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.”

The Corridor-4 (Light House – Poonamallee Bypass) spans approximately 26.1 km, of which a significant portion passes through densely populated urban areas. The Porur–Powerhouse stretch is one of its most critical sections, featuring a double-decker structure that accommodates both a flyover and an elevated metro track, designed to optimize urban space and reduce traffic bottlenecks.

This milestone significantly advances CMRL’s target to complete major civil works on Corridor-4 by 2026, improving connectivity across west Chennai and easing travel between residential and commercial hubs.

With this accomplishment, Chennai Metro continues to reinforce its reputation for precision engineering, timely execution, and safety excellence. The successful completion of all precast works between Porur and Powerhouse brings the city one step closer to a seamlessly connected, future-ready metro system designed to serve millions of daily commuters.
