Kochi, India (Metro Rail Today): Afcons Infrastructure has marked a significant milestone by initiating the civil construction of Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 project. This exciting development began with the boring of the first test pile under Package KBC3, a crucial step towards the expansion of Kochi's urban transit system.
Barely two weeks prior, Afcons was awarded the Phase 2 construction contract by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) for a substantial Rs. 1141.32 crore. The project comes with a tight construction deadline of 600 days, reflecting the urgency and importance of this metro expansion for the city.
Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 will feature a new 11.2 km elevated line, aptly named the Pink Line. This line will connect key areas from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad and Infopark (Smart City), incorporating 11 strategically placed stations to enhance urban mobility.
The Pink Line will include the following stations:
On Wednesday, following a traditional puja at around 10:30 am, Afcons bored their first test pile in the Kunnumpuram neighborhood of Kakkanad. The event was attended by officials from KMRL and SYSTRA, the General Consultant for Phase 2. This ceremonial start symbolizes the beginning of a crucial phase in the construction process.
Arun Soil Lab Pvt. Ltd. is currently conducting geotechnical soil investigations at multiple spots along the line’s alignment. This revalidation of KMRL’s prior investigation is essential to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the metro line.
The actual construction of the line’s substructure (foundation) is expected to commence in a month or two. This phase will involve extensive groundwork and preparation to support the elevated tracks and stations of the Pink Line.
The completion of Kochi Metro Phase 2’s Pink Line will significantly enhance the city's public transportation network. By connecting key residential, commercial, and technological hubs, the new line is poised to reduce traffic congestion, decrease travel time, and provide a sustainable mode of transport for daily commuters.
Afcons Infrastructure’s commencement of the test piling for Kochi Metro Phase 2 is a pivotal step in the expansion of Kochi's metro network. As construction progresses, the Pink Line promises to transform urban mobility in Kochi, offering residents a faster, more efficient, and eco-friendly mode of transportation. This development underscores the ongoing commitment to enhancing public infrastructure and improving the quality of life in Kochi.
