Alstom delivers First Trainset for Delhi Metro Phase 4 Project

Sri City, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant milestone for India's metro rail infrastructure, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has successfully handed over the first Metropolis metro trainset to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for its Phase IV project. This achievement marks a pivotal step under the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, showcasing a commitment to local manufacturing.

The newly manufactured metro trains, produced entirely in SriCity, Andhra Pradesh, are equipped with advanced Grade of Automation (GOA) 4 driverless features. Designed for safe speeds of up to 95 km/h and operational speeds of 85 km/h, these trains are set to enhance the efficiency and safety of Delhi's expanding metro network.

Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, expressed his excitement about the delivery. “Today marks a historic occasion for the Delhi Metro family as we take a significant step towards operationalizing the Phase IV corridors. The dispatch of the first train set from Sri City represents a new era of convenience and eco-friendly travel for our passengers,” he stated.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, reflected on the long-standing collaboration with DMRC. “We are proud to contribute to this transformative project with our locally manufactured, state-of-the-art Metropolis metro trains. This partnership not only aims to improve the quality of life for citizens but also drives the city's development. At Alstom, we are dedicated to creating sustainable solutions that will stand the test of time,” he said.

The contract awarded to Alstom in November 2022 includes the delivery of 52 trainsets, each consisting of six cars. This expansion will serve three lines of the DMRC: extensions of the existing Line 7 and Line 8, and the new Gold Line 10, which will connect Aerocity to Tughlakabad over a total distance of 64.67 km. The project, which officially commenced production in February 2024, has a total value of 312 million euros, encompassing a 15-year maintenance plan for 13 trainsets.

This initiative is noteworthy as it marks the first maintenance project for the Delhi Metro that has been outsourced to an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), representing a significant shift in operational strategy.

Alstom’s Metropolis metros have been at the forefront of urban mobility for over 60 years, tailored to meet the diverse needs of cities worldwide. These modern trains are designed for flexibility, featuring configurations ranging from 2 to 9 cars, accommodating various gauge profiles and voltage systems. With a focus on low noise levels, high recyclability, and optimized energy efficiency, Alstom’s metro solutions minimize environmental impact while ensuring reliable service.

With over 35,000 metro cars ordered or currently in operation across more than 70 cities in 40 countries, Alstom continues to be a pivotal player in the global urban transport landscape.

The delivery of the first trainset for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation not only highlights Alstom’s commitment to local manufacturing and innovation but also underscores the Indian government's efforts to enhance urban mobility through sustainable infrastructure. As Delhi embarks on this new chapter in its metro expansion, commuters can look forward to a more efficient, eco-friendly travel experience in the years to come.
