Madrid, Spain (Metro Rail Today): Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has signed a landmark contract with Metro de Madrid to upgrade the signalling system on Line 6, transforming it into the city’s first fully driverless metro line. This revolutionary project will enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency while offering a seamless travel experience for the nearly 400,000 daily commuters on the 23.5 km circular line, which connects 28 stations and serves as a critical hub for the metro network.
The upgrade will see Line 6 transition from semi-automated (Grade of Automation 2) to fully autonomous operation (Grade of Automation 4), utilizing Alstom’s state-of-the-art Urbalis CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) system. The new technology will enable shorter intervals between trains, improved punctuality, and significant energy savings, solidifying Madrid Metro's position as a leader in innovative urban transit.
Leopoldo Maestu, Alstom Managing Director for Spain and Portugal, emphasized the importance of this project, "We are grateful to Metro de Madrid for their trust in our team and our Railway Signalling Excellence Centre in Madrid. This iconic project will transform and modernize Madrid's metro system, paving the way for smarter and more sustainable mobility solutions."
The project will be executed by Alstom's Railway Signalling Excellence Centre in Madrid, which employs over 800 experts in advanced urban and mainline signalling technologies. This facility has been instrumental in delivering major transportation projects globally, including Mexico’s Tren Maya, Cairo’s monorail, and high-speed rail systems in Saudi Arabia.
In Spain, Alstom has played a pivotal role in shaping modern transportation, having provided the initial CBTC systems for Madrid Metro's Lines 1 and 6 and manufacturing 85% of the fleet traction systems at its Trápaga facility in Bizkaia.
With over 30 years of expertise and CBTC systems operating on 190 metro lines in 32 countries, Alstom continues to set benchmarks in urban transit innovation. From São Paulo and Paris to Riyadh and Shanghai, Alstom’s solutions ensure safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation for millions worldwide.
The fully automated Line 6 will not only enhance passenger experience but also contribute to Madrid’s sustainability goals by reducing energy consumption and operational costs. This partnership reinforces Alstom’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that drive urban mobility into a smarter, greener future.
Stay tuned as Madrid Metro embarks on this transformative journey to redefine public transportation for the city’s residents and visitors alike.
