Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has declared Alstom Transport India Limited as the lowest bidder for the rolling stock contract for Chennai Metro Phase 2 under package ARE04A. The contract, valued at ₹1,538.3 crore, will see Alstom supplying 96 coaches, which will be configured into 32 train sets. Each train set will consist of three cars in a DMC+TC+DMC configuration. These trains will be maintained at one of three depots: Madhavaram Depot (serving Lines 3 and 5), Semmancheri Depot (Line 3), or Poonamallee Depot (Line 4).
The bidding process saw participation from multiple firms, including BEML Limited, which quoted ₹1,551.9 crore, and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, which submitted a bid of ₹1,634.2 crore. After a competitive process, Alstom emerged as the lowest bidder. The technical bids were opened on January 23, 2025, followed by a detailed evaluation that concluded on March 12, 2025. The financial bids were also opened on the same day, confirming Alstom’s selection for the project.
The scope of this contract includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, and training of personnel for standard gauge metro rolling stock. Additionally, Alstom will be responsible for a comprehensive 15-year maintenance contract. The contract period is set for 7,505 days, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
Chennai Metro Phase 2, which received approval from the Central Government in October 2024, aims to enhance urban mobility with three new corridors. Corridor 3 will stretch from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, covering 45.4 km with 49 stations. Corridor 4 will connect Light House to Poonamallee Bypass over 26.1 km, featuring 28 stations. Meanwhile, Corridor 5 will span 44.6 km from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, including 48 stations.
With Alstom’s involvement, Chennai Metro Phase 2 is set to deliver state-of-the-art metro services, improving connectivity and easing congestion in one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan cities.
