Anil Kumar Khandelwal appointed as Member (Infrastructure), Railway Board, Govt of India

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): A seasoned veteran of the Indian Railways, Anil Kumar Khandelwal, belonging to the distinguished 1987 batch of the Indian Railway Engineering Service (IRSE), assumed the pivotal role of Member (Infrastructure), Railway Board, and ex-officio secretary to the Government of India on February 21, 2024. This significant appointment follows his successful tenure as the General Manager of East Central Railway.

An alumnus of MNIT, Jaipur, with a degree in Civil Engineering, Khandelwal furthered his education with an M.Tech degree from IIT, Roorkee. Embarking on his railway service journey as AEN/Bellampalli in South Central Railway, he gradually ascended to key positions across various zones and projects.

With over 35 years of rich experience, Khandelwal has played a pivotal role in the creation and maintenance of critical railway infrastructure. His leadership has been instrumental in the successful execution of diverse construction projects, ranging from bridges to buildings and railway tracks.

A highlight in his career was his significant contributions to the construction of the Chenab Bridge, recognized as the world's highest railway bridge, during his tenure as Chief Administrative Officer/Construction of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project. As Executive Director/Track Machine in the Railway Board, he played a crucial role in transforming India into an exporter of Track Machine, a landmark achievement for Indian Railways.

Appointed as the first Principal Executive Director of the Gati Shakti Directorate, Khandelwal spearheaded visionary planning, sanctioning, and monitoring of projects. Under his leadership, Indian Railways witnessed the highest-ever commissioning of railway tracks in the year 2022-23.

Apart from his professional prowess, Khandelwal has showcased his sporting spirit. Having played basketball at the state level, he served as the President of the Sports Association of Northern Railway in 2021-22, leading the Northern Railway team to victory in the prestigious Kaul’s Gold Cup.

Khandelwal's commitment to growth is evident through his participation in advanced studies programs at INSEAD/Singapore, ICLIF/Malaysia, and the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.
