Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant advancement for India’s metro rail technology, Sanjay Seth, the Raksha Rajya Mantri, officially flagged off a new driverless MRS-1 Metro trainset at BEML Limited’s Bangalore plant recently. This event marks the delivery of the 55th trainset from BEML to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) for use on Line 2 and Line 7.
BEML, a leading Indian manufacturer in the rail industry, clinched this prestigious order amid intense global competition. The contract encompasses the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, and training for a total of 96 trainsets (6-car formations) of standard gauge metro cars. This achievement underscores BEML’s capabilities and commitment to advancing urban transit solutions.
During the flag-off ceremony, Shri Sanjay Seth highlighted the importance of indigenously developed metro systems in transforming urban mobility across the nation. He stated, “BEML’s role in the ‘Make in India’ initiative is exemplary. The introduction of this driverless metro trainset symbolizes our nation’s growing prowess in manufacturing sophisticated transportation solutions.”
Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of BEML, expressed his gratitude for the Ministry’s ongoing support. As the first Indian rolling stock manufacturer to design, develop, and supply driverless trains, BEML takes pride in its role in enhancing Mumbai’s metro network. The newly unveiled 6-car trainset, optimized for passenger comfort, safety, and energy efficiency, adheres to stringent global standards. It boasts a capacity to accommodate approximately 2,306 passengers, with 298 seating arrangements.
