Bihar Cabinet approves proposal for new Metro Rail Projects in four additional cities

Patna, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant move towards enhancing urban transportation infrastructure, the Bihar cabinet, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has approved metro projects in four more cities: Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur. This decision was made in a cabinet meeting chaired by Kumar on Thursday, marking a pivotal step in the state’s efforts to improve public transportation and urban mobility.

The foundation of the first metro project in Bihar, the Patna Metro, was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, 2019, and its construction is currently underway. The latest approval by the Bihar cabinet aims to extend the benefits of metro connectivity to additional urban centers in the state.

S. Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat), briefed reporters after the cabinet meeting, stating, "The state cabinet approved the Urban Development and Housing Department's proposal pertaining to metro rail projects in Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur. Now, the feasibility reports will be prepared, after which the detailed project reports (DPR) will be finalized."

According to Siddharth, the funding structure for these metro projects involves a shared financial responsibility between the central government, the state government, and financial institutions. The central and state governments will each bear 20% of the project cost, while the remaining 60% will be covered by financial institutions. This collaborative funding model aims to ensure the efficient and timely execution of the projects.

The Patna Metro project, which is progressing steadily, serves as a model for the newly approved metro projects. In its first phase, the Patna Metro will feature five operational stations by March next year. The project includes 15.36 km of elevated track and 16.30 km of underground track, reflecting a comprehensive approach to urban transit solutions.

The approval for additional metro projects is a testament to the state government's commitment to developing robust urban infrastructure. By extending metro connectivity to Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur, the Bihar government aims to address the growing transportation needs of these cities, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable urban development.
