Indore, India (Metro Rail Today): The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has completed the statutory safety inspection of the second phase of the Indore Metro Rail Project’s priority corridor, bringing the project a step closer to expanded commercial operations.
The inspection was conducted by a team led by Shri Nilabhra Sengupta, Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, between March 15 and March 18, covering the 17.5-km priority corridor of the metro system.
Officials from Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) confirmed that the corridor underwent comprehensive evaluation across multiple technical and operational parameters.
During the four-day inspection, the CMRS team — consisting of six members — reviewed critical aspects of the metro system to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
The inspection included evaluation of:
Station management systems
Passenger amenities and accessibility
Train speed and braking performance
Signalling systems
Emergency response procedures
Operational safety protocols
The inspection is a mandatory regulatory process before the commencement of commercial operations on any metro rail corridor in India.
A 6-km section of the Indore Metro priority corridor was already opened for commercial operations on 31 May 2025, marking the city’s entry into the network of metro-served urban centres in India.
With the completion of the latest CMRS inspection, authorities are now preparing to expand operations along additional sections of the corridor.
MPMRCL Managing Director S. Krishna Chaitanya said that the project is now awaiting final clearance following the inspection.
“With a green light from the CMRS, commercial operations of the second phase of the metro can begin soon,” he stated.
The Indore Metro Rail Project is designed as a 31.32-km urban rapid transit system, aimed at improving mobility across Madhya Pradesh’s largest city.
The project has an estimated cost of ₹7,500.8 crore and includes a combination of elevated and underground sections, connecting major residential, commercial, and institutional areas across Indore.
Construction of the metro project began in 2019.
However, implementation faced challenges due to dense residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas, which led to construction delays and potential cost escalation.
Once fully operational, the Indore Metro is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and offer a reliable public transport alternative for commuters in the rapidly growing city.
The metro system is also expected to contribute to sustainable urban mobility by reducing reliance on private vehicles and lowering carbon emissions.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, highlighted the importance of safety certification in ensuring reliable metro operations.
“Safety inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety are a critical milestone for any metro project. They ensure that the infrastructure, rolling stock, and operational systems meet the highest standards before passenger services commence,” she said.
She added that expanding metro services in emerging cities such as Indore will play a key role in strengthening urban mobility and supporting sustainable city growth.
With the CMRS inspection completed, the Indore Metro project is now closer to expanding its operational network, bringing modern rapid transit services to more commuters across the city.
The upcoming expansion is expected to further strengthen Indore’s public transport infrastructure and support the city’s transition toward smart, efficient, and sustainable urban mobility.
