Construction works begin for Kochi Metro Phase 2 corridor

Kochi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a pivotal step towards enhancing urban connectivity, the piling work for the second phase of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd's project has commenced. This significant undertaking aims to link the city with its bustling IT hub at Infopark. The inauguration of the piling work for the initial station on this stretch, situated near the Cochin Special Economic Zone (CSEZ), marks a significant milestone in the project's progress.

As per the planned schedule, the piling work was initiated last week, setting the foundation for the expansion. The first station, strategically located near CSEZ, will serve as a crucial node in facilitating seamless travel for commuters. The project's advancement is supported by the expertise of Systra and Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd, who have been appointed as general consultants. Additionally, Egis India's involvement as the detailed design consultant adds another layer of precision to the project's execution. The upcoming phase will witness the issuance of tenders, inviting bids for the construction of vital viaducts that will define the new landscape of urban mobility.

The second phase of this transformative project encompasses an 11.2 km-long elevated line, extending from the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium station to Infopark via Kakkanad, encompassing a total of 11 stations. The Central government has allocated a substantial `1,957 crore for the realization of this vision. Notably, the process of land acquisition between the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium and Palarivattom is poised to conclude by September. With nearly 90% of land acquisition along the Palarivattom-JLN stretch already accomplished, the remaining acquisition is anticipated to be finalized in the coming month.

Amidst the ongoing progress, a noteworthy suggestion to extend the line to Edachira is actively under consideration. The stakeholders, including the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) and the Thrikkakara municipality, have engaged in discussions about the feasibility of incorporating Edachira into the expansion. However, a definitive decision on this aspect is yet to be reached, leaving room for further exploration.

As part of the broader expansion endeavors encompassing phase 11, the Kerala Media Academy, also recognized as the Kerala Press Academy, is faced with a significant decision. To facilitate the project's realization, the academy will contribute approximately 80 cents of its total three-acre land parcel. This cooperative effort underscores the commitment to urban development and efficient infrastructure. The decision also necessitates the dismantling of the existing academy building, including the hostel facilities. To fill this void, a proposal has been presented to the government, outlining plans for a new structure that aligns with the project's objectives.

The governing body of the academy has put forward a proposal to erect a new building within the same campus, entailing an estimated cost of Rs 26 crore. The journey towards realizing this vision has not been without challenges. The allocation of funds for constructing the primary institute faced fluctuations due to the prevailing financial circumstances. Nevertheless, the resolve to complete this vital institute remained steadfast, exemplifying the commitment of all stakeholders involved.

The commencement of piling work for the second phase of the Kochi Metro project heralds a new era of urban connectivity and progress. The collaborative efforts of the government, consultants, and stakeholders demonstrate a shared dedication to creating a well-connected and efficient cityscape. As this transformative journey unfolds, it is anticipated to lay the foundation for improved urban mobility, bolstered economic activity, and an elevated quality of life for the citizens of Kochi.
