New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) celebrated its 31st Foundation Day today with a grand ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event marked more than three decades of Delhi Metro’s transformative journey in urban mobility, attended by prominent dignitaries and public officials.
Manohar Lal, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs & Power, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Smt. Rekha Gupta, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi (GNCTD), was present as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries included Katikithala Srinivas, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and Chairman, DMRC; Dharmendra, Chief Secretary, GNCTD; and Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC.
In his address, Union Minister Manohar Lal applauded DMRC’s significant achievements, citing the record 78 lakh daily passenger journeys — a number that exceeds the population of many countries.
“The journey is convenient, safe, and disciplined. Life has become much easier for the passengers,” he said.
Looking toward the future, he highlighted the need to strengthen urban mobility systems in anticipation of 50% of India’s population living in urban areas by 2047. He proposed an innovative idea to introduce cargo compartments in metro trains, which would enable vendors, hawkers, and small businesses to transport goods efficiently across the city.
“This step would save time, reduce energy consumption, and enhance business efficiency for the urban working class,” he noted.
He also emphasized the importance of integrating green and renewable energy solutions into metro operations, aligning with India’s broader sustainable development goals.
Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta praised the Delhi Metro’s profound impact on the city's people, calling it a true “lifeline” of the capital.
“There is a 'feel good factor' when a passenger enters the Delhi Metro. They keep it clean, and they follow the rules. There has been a behavioural change,” she said, acknowledging DMRC’s role in shaping public discipline and urban values.
As part of the celebrations, DMRC’s Annual Awards were presented to individuals and teams for their outstanding contributions to the organisation. The event served not only as a celebration but also as a moment of reflection on how far the Delhi Metro has come—from its modest beginnings to becoming one of the largest and most efficient metro systems in the world.
With a continued focus on safety, sustainability, and innovation, DMRC remains committed to delivering dependable and eco-friendly transportation to millions in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
