DMRC awarded ₹5,870 crore Operation and Maintenance Contract for Chennai Metro Phase 2

Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has officially handed over the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of its Phase II network to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC) in a significant step forward for the city's urban transport expansion. The contract, valued at ₹5,870 crores, covers a sprawling 118.9 kilometers of metro rail, divided across three major corridors—C3, C4, and C5.

The corridors include:

• C3: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT II Metro

• C4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass

• C5: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur

Additionally, the contract encompasses the operation and maintenance of three Maintenance Depots located at Madhavaram, Poonamallee, and Semmancheri.

On April 2, 2025, M.A. Siddique, Managing Director of CMRL, officially handed over the LoA to Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, in a ceremony attended by senior officials from both CMRL and DMRC, including S. Krishnamoorthy, Director (Finance) of CMRL, and Dr. Amit Kumar Jain, Director (Operations & Services) of DMRC.

The scope of work under this agreement is comprehensive, covering all operations and maintenance activities for the Phase II network’s assets, including maintenance at the three depots. DMRC will be responsible for ensuring that all services meet global standards in terms of passenger experience and asset upkeep, aligning with best practices in metro operations and maintenance.

The contract will last for twelve years, starting from the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the last segment of Phase II, with the potential for a three-year extension based on DMRC’s satisfactory performance. This is second win of DMRC after taking over of O&M contract of Mumbai Metro Line 3 Project.

This major milestone represents another step toward improving Chennai’s metro infrastructure, enhancing connectivity across the city, and delivering modern, efficient services to passengers, all while ensuring high standards of maintenance and operational efficiency.
