HMRTC Board approves two New Metro Corridors of Gurugram Metro Rail Project

Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Gurugram’s public transportation infrastructure, the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has approved two new Metro routes aimed at expanding connectivity within the city. The announcement, made on August 6 during the 57th HMRTC board meeting in Chandigarh, promises to greatly enhance the Metro network by linking densely populated residential areas with major business districts.

The newly approved routes are:

  • Bhondsi Village to Gurugram Railway Station
  • Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 5

Details of the New Metro Routes

The first route, stretching 17 kilometers from Bhondsi village to Gurugram railway station, will traverse through key areas including Vatika Chowk, Subash Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Sadar Bazar, and Gurugram bus stand. This route will primarily follow Sohna Road and is designed to connect with the proposed Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) at Rajiv Chowk. Additionally, it will link with the already approved Metro extension from Millennium City Centre Metro station to Gurugram railway station, enhancing overall transit connectivity in the region.

The second route, spanning 13 kilometers, will connect Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 5. It will include stops at Millennium City Centre Metro station, Signature Tower crossing, Rana Pratap Chowk, and Atul Kataria Chowk. This route will run along Sheetla Mata Road, providing crucial access to key areas in the city.

Upcoming Steps and Project Development

HMRTC plans to hire consultants shortly to prepare detailed project reports for these new routes, according to a senior corporation official who requested anonymity. These reports will be essential for the next phases of planning and construction.

Yash Sachdeva, Adviser (Mobility) at the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), emphasized that these new routes are integral to the authority’s broader vision of developing an extensive Metro network across the city by 2031. "These routes will cover some of the most densely populated areas in Gurugram as well as important business districts. Once operational, they will significantly improve connectivity and cater to a large number of commuters. Moreover, they will integrate with the RRTS network along the national highway and the ongoing Metro extension projects," Sachdeva explained.

Progress on Existing Projects

In addition to the new routes, progress is also being made on the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) initiative. Last year, the Haryana government established GMRL as a special purpose vehicle to oversee the 28.5-kilometer Metro extension project from Millennium City Centre to Cyber Hub. This extension is expected to bring a significant portion of Gurugram under the Metro network. A senior GMRL official reported that the geo-technical survey for this project is nearly complete and the process to hire a design and general consultant is underway.

The approval of these two new Metro routes marks a pivotal step in expanding Gurugram’s public transport infrastructure. By linking crucial residential and business areas, these routes will not only ease congestion but also provide residents with efficient and reliable transit options. As the project moves forward, it will contribute significantly to the urban mobility landscape of Gurugram, aligning with the city’s future growth and development goals.
