Kanpur Metro completes construction of the Up-Line Tunnel from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj

Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride forward, the Kanpur Metro Rail Project marked a milestone today with the completion of the first tunnel on the 4.24 km long Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section, falling under Corridor-1 (from IIT to Naubasta). The 'Azad' Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) accomplished a breakthrough by successfully constructing a 1250-meter-long tunnel from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj.

The completion of the tunnel signifies a crucial advancement in the underground infrastructure development of Kanpur. The 'Azad' TBM, which commenced its journey from Kanpur Central last October, has been instrumental in this achievement. Upon its arrival at the retrieval shaft at Nayaganj, the project staff and officials welcomed the TBM with applause, marking the completion of approximately 1250 meters of tunnel construction.

The Kanpur Metro project has been deploying 'Azad' and 'Vidyarthi' TBM machines for tunnel construction along the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section. Currently, the focus is on tunnelling from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj, with subsequent plans for tunnels from the cut and cover shaft near Swadeshi Cotton Mill towards Kanpur Central via Transport Nagar and Jhakarkatti underground stations.

During the ceremony commemorating the breakthrough, senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) and contracting agencies were present at the under-construction Nayaganj station to witness the achievement firsthand.

Congratulating the team on this feat, Managing Director of UPMRC, Sushil Kumar, expressed his satisfaction with the progress. "The successful completion of tunnel construction work from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj is a testament to the dedication and efficiency of our team. With the aid of advanced TBM technology, we've been able to navigate through the busiest areas of the city seamlessly," said Shri Sushil Kumar.

He further emphasized the parallel progress in civil construction and system installation to ensure timely completion. "Our engineers have been working tirelessly to maintain the momentum, and I am confident that, like the Priority Corridors in other cities, we will meet our deadlines here as well," he added.

Looking ahead, the 'Azad' and 'Vidyarthi' TBMs will undergo relaunching from the shaft near Swadeshi Cotton Mill/Shyam Palace Cinema. These machines will then proceed to construct tunnels towards the retrieval shaft of Kanpur Central Metro Station via Transport Nagar and Jhakarkatti stations, marking the completion of tunnelling activities under this section.

Presently, the Kanpur Metro's commuter services are operational on the 9 km long Priority Corridor (from IIT to Motijheel) within the approximately 24 km long Corridor-1 (from IIT to Naubasta). Construction activities are also underway in the 5 km long Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section, demonstrating the project's comprehensive progress across various sections.

The completion of the 'up-line' tunnel from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj stands as a testament to the relentless efforts and technological advancements driving the Kanpur Metro Rail Project forward. With significant milestones achieved and future plans set in motion, the project is poised to revolutionize the city's transportation landscape.
