KCS-AVADH consortium signs ₹323 crore contract for Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

New Delhi, India (Rail & Metro Today): The KCS-AVADH Consortium has signed a contract agreement with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for the supply and maintenance of specialised machinery required for rolling stock maintenance under India's first high-speed rail project, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor.

The agreement, signed on August 6, 2026, covers Package MAHSR-IM-1(C) and marks another important step towards establishing the advanced maintenance ecosystem required for India's first bullet train network.

₹323 Crore Contract Covers Specialised High-Speed Rail Machinery

Under the contract, the KCS-AVADH Consortium will undertake the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning and comprehensive annual maintenance of specialised machinery for rolling stock maintenance.

The contract is valued at approximately ₹323 crore and includes specialised equipment intended to support maintenance and operational readiness of the high-speed rail rolling stock and associated infrastructure.

The package forms part of the broader MAHSR project, which is being implemented by NHSRCL with technical cooperation from Japan.

South Korean Expertise Meets Indian Rail Manufacturing

The consortium brings together Kumchun System Co. (KCH), South Korea, and Avadh Rail Infra Limited, combining international expertise in railway maintenance equipment with Indian manufacturing and railway engineering capabilities.

Kumchun System Co. is a specialised South Korean manufacturer of railway special vehicles, rolling stock maintenance fleets and testing and measuring equipment. Its expertise includes machinery designed for specialised railway maintenance applications.

The company's participation in the MAHSR project brings advanced railway maintenance technology from South Korea into India's rapidly developing high-speed rail ecosystem.

Avadh Rail Infra to Support Indigenous Capability

Avadh Rail Infra Limited, formerly known as Avadh Rubber Limited, is an Indian railway engineering company and a Corporate Member of the Rail Chamber. The company is a manufacturer and RDSO-approved supplier of safety-critical railway components and specialised engineering products.

Established in 1975 as the flagship company of the SUMO Group, Avadh has developed capabilities serving India's railway and infrastructure supply chains.

The partnership with KCH is expected to strengthen the role of Indian industry in supplying specialised equipment for the country's high-speed rail programme while supporting technology and capability development within the domestic railway manufacturing ecosystem.

Supporting Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Operations

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor spans approximately 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and is being developed as India's first dedicated high-speed rail corridor.

As civil construction, trackwork, electrification and systems installation advance across the corridor, specialised maintenance infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. The machinery covered under Package MAHSR-IM-1(C) will support the maintenance requirements associated with the high-speed rolling stock.

High-speed railway operations require highly specialised maintenance equipment capable of maintaining stringent standards for safety, reliability, precision and availability. The contract therefore represents an important component of the operational infrastructure being established for the MAHSR project.

Building India's High-Speed Rail Supply Chain

The KCS-AVADH partnership also reflects the growing participation of international technology providers and Indian engineering companies in India's high-speed rail programme.

With the country planning multiple additional high-speed rail corridors, the development of domestic capabilities in rolling stock maintenance, specialised railway machinery, testing equipment and safety-critical components is expected to become increasingly important.

The signing of the MAHSR-IM-1(C) contract consequently represents more than an equipment procurement milestone. It contributes to the creation of the specialised maintenance ecosystem required to support India's transition from conventional rail to high-speed railway operations.
