MIA Construction wins civil contract for Bhubaneswar Metro's Phulapokhari Depot

Bhubaneswar, India (Metro Rail Today): MIA Construction Pvt. Ltd. has clinched the contract for the civil construction of the Phulapokhari Depot & Workshop under Phase 1 of the Bhubaneswar Metro project. The announcement came after MIA Construction emerged as the lowest bidder in the tender process managed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Located on a 16-hectare site in Phulapokhari, the depot will serve as the primary facility for stabling, maintenance, and servicing of trains operating on Bhubaneswar Metro’s Line-1. This line spans 26 km and connects Trisulia Square to Biju Patnaik Airport via 20 elevated stations. The contract’s scope includes the design and construction of pre-engineered buildings (PEB) for workshops, stabling sheds, and inspection facilities. Additionally, it involves the construction of substructures such as foundations, pits, grade slabs, RCC columns, beams, as well as RCC buildings for administrative offices.

DMRC initiated the bidding process for the Phulapokhari Depot in January 2024, setting a relaxed deadline of 36 months (3 years) for completion with an estimated budget of Rs. 104.74 crore. Technical bids, which were opened in early April, revealed a competitive field with 22 initial bidders. Ultimately, 12 firms were disqualified for not meeting the tender’s stringent conditions, leaving MIA Construction among the top contenders based on its competitive bid of Rs79.75 crore. The awarding of the BBC-02 contract to MIA Construction signifies a significant step forward in the development of Bhubaneswar Metro’s infrastructure. It marks MIA Construction’s entry into depot construction under DMRC, adding to its portfolio of multi-modal integration projects previously awarded by the corporation. As preparations for the depot’s construction progress, including the ongoing precast boundary wall installation under Package BBC-01, attention now turns to the forthcoming bids for mainline construction under packages BBC-03, BBC-04, and BBC-05.

With MIA Construction poised to commence work pending final contract formalities, the Bhubaneswar Metro project is set to advance toward its Phase 1 completion milestones. The depot’s construction represents a crucial component in enhancing metro service capabilities within Bhubaneswar, catering to future urban mobility needs and reinforcing connectivity across the city.
