Design Consultancy Tenders floated for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 3 Elevated Corridors

Ahmedabad, India (Metro Rail Today): The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has taken another significant step towards the expansion of Ahmedabad’s metro network by inviting tenders for Detailed Design Consultancy (DDC) services for two proposed elevated corridors under Ahmedabad Metro Phase-3.

The proposed metro corridors will strengthen connectivity across rapidly developing western and southwestern parts of Ahmedabad, while also supporting future regional transit integration through a planned Metro-RRTS hybrid corridor.

The latest development comes even as the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Ahmedabad Metro Phase-3 is still awaiting approval from the Central Government.

Two Elevated Corridors Planned Under Phase-3

Under the proposed Phase-3 expansion, GMRC plans to develop nearly 10.8 km of elevated metro infrastructure comprising nine stations across two strategic corridors.

1. Godhavi – Canal Road Metro Corridor

  • Length: Approx. 7.5 km
  • Type: Elevated Metro-RRTS Hybrid Corridor
  • Stations: 6

The larger of the two corridors has been conceptualised as a hybrid Metro and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) route connecting Godhavi to Canal Road Metro Station. The corridor is expected to improve suburban connectivity while supporting long-term regional mobility integration for Ahmedabad’s expanding urban agglomeration.

2. Thaltej Gam – Canal Road Metro Corridor

  • Length: Approx. 3.3 km
  • Type: Elevated Metro Corridor
  • Stations: 3

The second corridor will connect Thaltej Gam with Canal Road Metro Station, improving last-mile connectivity and strengthening metro access in western Ahmedabad.

GMRC has invited bids for consultancy services covering:

  • Detailed architectural design
  • Structural design
  • Viaduct engineering
  • Elevated station design
  • Associated metro infrastructure planning

The selected consultant will support the preparation of detailed engineering solutions for both proposed corridors.

The combined cost of the two proposed corridors is estimated at approximately ₹2,825 crore, reflecting Ahmedabad Metro’s continued expansion as one of India’s fastest-growing urban transit systems.

Ahmedabad Metro has witnessed rapid development over the past few years, with multiple operational and under-construction corridors enhancing connectivity across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The upcoming Phase-3 expansion is expected to:

  • Improve urban mobility in emerging growth zones
  • Enhance connectivity to western suburbs
  • Support transit-oriented urban development
  • Reduce road congestion
  • Strengthen integration with future regional transit systems

The inclusion of a Metro-RRTS hybrid corridor also signals Gujarat’s growing focus on integrating urban metro systems with regional rapid transit infrastructure for faster intercity and suburban connectivity.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:

“Ahmedabad Metro’s proposed Phase-3 expansion reflects the city’s evolving vision towards integrated and future-ready urban transportation. The inclusion of Metro-RRTS hybrid planning is particularly noteworthy as Indian cities increasingly move towards multimodal and regional mobility solutions to support sustainable urban growth.”

Strategic Importance of Canal Road Connectivity

Canal Road Metro Station is emerging as an important interchange and mobility node within Ahmedabad’s future transit network. The proposed corridors are expected to improve commuter accessibility and distribute passenger movement more efficiently across the city’s expanding metro system.

Urban transport planners believe the Phase-3 corridors could significantly support Ahmedabad’s long-term urban growth strategy, particularly as residential, commercial, and institutional developments continue to expand towards the city’s western periphery.
