GMRC issues ₹879 crore Civil Tender for Airport Extension under Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A

Ahmedabad, India (Rail & Metro Today): The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has invited bids for a major ₹879.27 crore civil construction package for Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A, taking the proposed metro connectivity to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport a step closer to implementation.

The tender, floated under GMRC/CONS/STNS+VDCT+UG/PH-2A/2026, covers the construction of both elevated and underground sections of the 6.032-km airport extension corridor. The package is estimated at ₹879.27 crore, excluding taxes, and has a completion period of 36 months.

The tender includes 4.97 km of elevated viaduct, four elevated metro stations and a 1.01-km underground section with one underground station. The development is expected to strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad's key urban areas, the airport and the wider Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network.

Tender Covers Elevated and Underground Construction

Under the civil package, the selected contractor will undertake the design, construction and completion of the specified elevated and underground works.

The elevated section will stretch for approximately 4.97 km from Koteshwar Road Dead End to the beginning of the ramp leading to the underground section. Four elevated stations will be constructed along this stretch at Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River and Sardar Nagar.

The package further includes a 1.01-km underground section, comprising a twin cut-and-cover tunnel between the ramp and the underground dead end. It will also include the construction of the ramp and the underground Airport Metro Station, which will provide direct metro access to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

GMRC has fixed the tender security at ₹8.79 crore. The pre-bid meeting is scheduled for 5 September 2026 at 11:30 AM, while the deadline for submission of bids is 28 September 2026 up to 3:00 PM.

Ahmedabad Airport Metro Extension Gains Momentum

The Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A corridor is planned as a 6.032-km extension from Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The corridor will have five stations, comprising four elevated stations and one underground station at the airport.

The project received Union Cabinet approval in June 2026 with an estimated investment of ₹2,169.04 crore. The latest civil construction tender represents a significant procurement milestone as GMRC moves towards the execution phase of the airport connectivity project.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A airport extension is an important investment in the future of urban mobility in Gujarat. Direct metro connectivity to the airport will improve passenger convenience, reduce dependence on road-based transport and strengthen the integration of Ahmedabad's public transport network. The latest civil tender indicates that the project is progressing from planning towards on-ground implementation.”

Metro Connectivity to Strengthen Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Region

The airport extension is expected to play an important role in improving multimodal connectivity in Ahmedabad, particularly for air passengers, airport employees and residents travelling between the airport and different parts of the metropolitan region.

Once Phase-2A is implemented, the operational metro network across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is expected to expand to approximately 77.63 km. The extension will also strengthen the role of the metro system as a mass rapid transit backbone connecting major residential, commercial, institutional and transport hubs.

For Ahmedabad, the direct airport connection is particularly significant as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is a major gateway for Gujarat. Integration of the airport with the metro network can offer passengers a faster and more reliable public transport alternative while supporting the city's long-term plans for sustainable urban mobility.

With the ₹879.27 crore civil tender now on the table, GMRC is seeking experienced contractors for one of the most critical construction packages of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A. The progress of this package will be closely watched as the state moves towards delivering a direct metro link to Ahmedabad's international airport.
