Japanese Delegation visits KRIDE to explore Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project opportunities

Bengaluru, India (Rail & Metro Today): A delegation from the JUBH Japanese Delegation Mission visited K-RIDE (Rail Infrastructure Development Company) on August 20 to gain insights into the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) and explore opportunities for greater cooperation between Japanese and Indian organisations in urban infrastructure and transportation.

The Japanese delegation held detailed discussions with Shri Lakshaman Singh, Managing Director, KRIDE/Bi-RIDE, covering key aspects of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, including project execution, tendering, innovative design measures, multimodal integration and rolling stock.

The interaction also provided an opportunity to understand the progress achieved in the suburban rail project in recent months and discuss its expected benefits for Bengaluru's growing population.

Japanese Delegation Explores Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project

The delegation comprised Hiroyuki Wakabayashi, Secretary General, JUBH; Keiko Otoguro, Director, International Department, The Building Center of Japan; Eigo Fujiwara, Project Manager, JUBH; and Kana Kato, Project Manager, JUBH.

During the meeting, KRIDE officials briefed the delegation on various aspects of the BSRP, including the tendering process and innovative approaches being adopted in the planning and implementation of the project. Discussions also focused on the importance of integrating suburban rail with other modes of public transport to create a more efficient and sustainable mobility system for Bengaluru.

The meeting highlighted the growing importance of integrated transport infrastructure as Indian cities expand rapidly and face increasing mobility challenges. Bengaluru, in particular, is witnessing significant demand for high-capacity public transport solutions, with suburban rail expected to complement the city's existing and planned metro and other transport networks.

Focus on Integrated and Sustainable Urban Mobility

The discussions between KRIDE and the Japanese delegation also covered broader approaches to planning and developing large-scale urban rail infrastructure. Particular attention was given to multimodal integration, innovative design, project delivery and rolling stock, all of which are critical to the long-term success of suburban rail systems.

The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project is being developed to improve regional connectivity and provide commuters with an efficient alternative to road-based transportation. Its integration with Bengaluru's wider public transport ecosystem is expected to support more sustainable urban mobility while helping address congestion on major road corridors.

Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “International knowledge exchange can play an important role in strengthening India's urban infrastructure capabilities. Engagements between Japanese institutions and Indian rail agencies can bring valuable experience in integrated transport planning, project execution and sustainable mobility. Bengaluru's suburban rail project offers an important platform for such collaboration.”

Japanese Mission Seeks Greater Cooperation with India

The JUBH Japanese Delegation Mission's visit to Bengaluru forms part of a broader engagement with India's housing, architecture and urban development sectors. With India emerging as a major market supported by strong economic growth and rapid urbanisation, the mission is seeking to understand market opportunities and identify areas for future collaboration.

As part of its India visit, the delegation is travelling to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where it is engaging with government agencies, industry organisations and private-sector stakeholders. The mission is also visiting projects associated with housing, architecture, urban development and transportation.

The delegation is seeking deeper insights into urban development and real estate trends in both the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Bengaluru Metropolitan Region, while facilitating knowledge sharing and networking between Japanese and Indian stakeholders.

Potential for India-Japan Urban Infrastructure Collaboration

The interaction between the JUBH delegation and KRIDE comes at a time when India is rapidly expanding its urban rail infrastructure. Japanese organisations have long been associated with expertise in urban planning, railway systems, construction technologies and sustainable infrastructure, creating potential opportunities for collaboration with Indian agencies and industry.

The visit concluded with an exchange of views on areas of mutual interest and possibilities for continued engagement in the development of modern, integrated and sustainable urban infrastructure.

The discussions are expected to contribute to stronger institutional relationships between Japanese and Indian stakeholders and could create opportunities for future cooperation in Bengaluru and other rapidly growing Indian cities.
