Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a landmark moment for Mumbai’s urban mobility and aviation infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the final stretch of the city’s first fully underground metro corridor—Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line)—on September 30, 2025. On the same day, he will also dedicate the Navi Mumbai International Airport to the nation, marking a transformative double milestone for Maharashtra.
The announcements were made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during a public address at BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Melava held at NSCI Dome, Worli, on Tuesday.
The newly completed stretch from Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli) to Cuffe Parade spans approximately 9.5 km and completes the 33.5 km Metro Line 3 corridor, which extends from Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai to Aarey in the north. Once operational, the Aqua Line will finally offer a direct underground link between Mumbai’s central business districts—including Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, and BKC—and residential zones in the western suburbs.
The metro corridor, being implemented by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), is the first fully underground line in the city and includes 27 stations, with a mix of underground and at-grade stops.
The final stretch had recently cleared its safety inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), as reported by The Indian Express, setting the stage for its imminent commercial opening.
October 2024: Operations began on the Aarey–BKC stretch
May 2025: Extension to Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli)
September 30, 2025: Final stretch from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade to be inaugurated
Once the entire corridor is functional, it is expected to carry over 1.6 million passengers daily, significantly easing congestion on Mumbai’s saturated suburban rail lines and road corridors.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, hailed the development, “Metro Line 3 is a testament to what next-generation infrastructure can achieve when aligned with strategic urban needs. The direct connectivity from Cuffe Parade to Aarey will redefine the way Mumbai moves.”
The inauguration of Metro Line 3's final leg and Navi Mumbai International Airport represents a dual leap in transit and connectivity for Mumbai. With both projects poised to open on September 30, commuters and travelers alike will gain faster, smarter, and more sustainable mobility options—ushering in a new era for India’s financial capital.
