Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has prioritized metro rail expansion in its ₹40,187 crore budget for FY 2025-26, allocating ₹10,969 crore to accelerate the construction and completion of multiple metro corridors.
The budget supports the development of four major metro corridors:
Metro 14: Kanjurmarg to Badlapur
Metro 13: Mira Road to Virar
Metro 10: Gaimukh to Mira Road
Metro 5 Extension: Durgadi (Kalyan) to Ulhasnagar
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairperson Eknath Shinde announced that 20 km of metro rail will become operational this year, with an additional 50 km expected in 2026. By 2027, all ongoing metro rail projects are expected to be completed, significantly enhancing connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
MMRDA is pushing to bring several metro projects closer to operation, ensuring improved urban mobility. The authority remains committed to fast-tracking construction efforts, with substantial progress expected in the coming months.
The metro expansion is backed by multiple revenue sources, including:
State Government Sub-Debts: ₹2,082 crore
Borrowings: ₹22,327.35 crore
Land Leasing & Development Rights: ₹7,344 crore
Urban Transport Fund & Project Operations: ₹3,305.27 crore
With metro rail forming the backbone of Mumbai’s future public transportation network, MMRDA’s 2025-26 budget solidifies its commitment to delivering world-class metro infrastructure, improving daily commutes, and supporting the region’s economic growth.
