Nippon Koei awarded ₹275 crore Consultancy Contract for Patna Metro Rail Project

Patna, India (Rail & Metro Today): The Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL) has awarded a major consultancy contract to Nippon Koei India Pvt Ltd for the implementation of the Patna Metro Rail Construction Project. The contract, valued at ₹275.24 crore, was awarded on September 26, 2026.

The consultancy contract had an estimated value of ₹391 crore, meaning Nippon Koei India secured the assignment at 29.61% below the estimated cost. The resulting saving for the project is approximately ₹115.76 crore.

The consultancy assignment covers a broad range of activities associated with the implementation of the Patna Metro project. Nippon Koei India will support PMRCL in bidding-document review and tender assistance, as well as construction supervision and project implementation.

The scope also includes quality and safety management, commissioning support, environmental and resettlement plans, operations and maintenance support, multimodal integration, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and public awareness activities.

The comprehensive nature of the assignment is expected to support PMRCL across multiple stages of project implementation, from procurement and construction supervision through commissioning and preparation for operations.

Patna Metro: 30.91-km Network

The Patna Metro Rail Project is being developed as a major mass rapid transit system for Patna, Bihar. Spearheaded by PMRCL, the project is developing a 30.91-km metro network across two primary corridors.

According to the project information provided, the network comprises the East-West Corridor, connecting Danapur Cantonment with Khemnichak, and the North-South Corridor, connecting Patna Junction Railway Station with New ISBT.

The East-West corridor is approximately 16.86 km long, including around 9.36 km of elevated alignment and 7.5 km of underground section. Major destinations along the corridor include Rukanpura and Mithapur.

The North-South corridor is approximately 14.56 km, with around 6.1 km of elevated alignment, while the remaining section is underground. The corridor is planned to serve important destinations including Gandhi Maidan, PMCH, Rajendra Nagar and Akashvani, besides connecting Patna Junction and New ISBT.

Focus on Integrated Urban Mobility

The Patna Metro project is intended to improve public transport connectivity across the rapidly developing Bihar capital while providing connections with major railway, institutional, commercial and residential destinations.

The consultancy scope's emphasis on multimodal integration and TOD reflects the broader role of metro systems in developing integrated urban mobility networks. Public awareness and passenger-oriented planning are also included within the assignment.

With Nippon Koei India now appointed for the comprehensive consultancy assignment, the project gains dedicated technical support across procurement, construction, safety, environmental and operational planning. The ₹275.24 crore contract, awarded at a substantial discount to the estimated value, also represents a significant project expenditure saving of ₹115.76 crore compared with the estimate.

The continued development of the Patna Metro network is expected to strengthen the city's mass rapid transit infrastructure and contribute to a more integrated public transport system for Patna's growing population.
