Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays Foundation Stone for ₹13,037 Crore Jaipur Metro Phase 2 Project

Jaipur, India (Metro Rail Today): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday virtually laid the foundation stone for the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Project during the inauguration ceremony of the Rajasthan Refinery at Pachpadra in Balotra district. The ambitious metro expansion is expected to transform urban mobility in Jaipur by strengthening connectivity between the city's major residential, commercial and industrial hubs.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that whenever the nation sets a goal or takes a new resolve, Rajasthan remains at the centre of India's development journey. He noted that the state is witnessing rapid infrastructure growth and said the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, along with the inauguration of the new terminal at Jodhpur Airport, would further accelerate Rajasthan's economic and urban development.

Prime Minister Modi said that once Phase-2 is completed, Jaipur's metro network will expand beyond 50 km, providing faster, safer and more convenient transportation for residents while significantly enhancing the travel experience for domestic and international tourists visiting the Pink City.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma described the project as a landmark gift from the Prime Minister to Rajasthan, involving an investment of more than ₹13,037 crore.

"Jaipur is globally known as the Pink City, but it is now steadily emerging as a modern metro city while preserving its rich cultural heritage. The new metro corridor will provide significant relief from traffic congestion, and we are confident that the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the completed project," the Chief Minister said.

The Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project involves the development of a 41-km North-South corridor extending from Prahladpura to Todi Mod. The corridor will connect key industrial areas such as Sitapura Industrial Area and Vishwakarma Industrial Area (VKIA), creating a high-capacity public transport backbone for the rapidly expanding city.

The project comprises 36 metro stations and will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan.

The corridor will provide seamless connectivity to several important destinations, including Jaipur International Airport, Tonk Road, Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, SMS Stadium, the Collectorate, Jaipur Railway Station, Ambabari and Vidyadhar Nagar. An underground station at the airport will ensure uninterrupted metro connectivity and improved multimodal integration.

Currently, Jaipur Metro Phase-1 operates an 11.64-km corridor between Mansarovar and Badi Chaupar with 11 stations. Phase-2 will significantly expand the city's metro network by introducing a new north-south axis that connects major employment and residential centres.

Following approval from the Union Cabinet, RMRCL has already issued the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for the first civil package valued at more than ₹918.04 crore.

The package includes the design and construction of a 12-km elevated section from Prahladpura to Pinjrapol Gaushala, comprising an elevated viaduct, 10 elevated stations, and a spur line connecting the main corridor to the metro depot.

The Phase-2 project is also expected to strengthen Jaipur's multimodal transport network by integrating metro services with the airport, railway station and major bus terminals. Plans are also being developed to introduce feeder bus services connecting nearby towns such as Chaksu and Chomu with the nearest metro stations, improving regional accessibility.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:

"The Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project represents a major investment in sustainable urban mobility and regional connectivity. By linking industrial zones, residential areas, the airport and key public institutions through an integrated transit network, the project will support economic growth, reduce congestion and enhance the quality of urban transportation for millions of commuters."

Jaipur Metro currently records an average daily ridership of approximately 50,000 passengers. Upon completion of Phase-2, daily ridership is projected to increase to around 2.5 lakh passengers, with estimates suggesting it could exceed four lakh passengers in the coming years.
