Rahee Infratech wins Track Work Contract for Patna Metro Phase 1

Patna, India (Metro Rail Today): Rahee Infratech Ltd. has secured a significant win in the Patna Metro project, being declared the lowest bidder for the installation of ballastless standard gauge tracks on the Priority Corridor of Patna Metro Phase 1. The contract was awarded by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) after a competitive bidding process that began in November 2024.

This contract is a major milestone for Patna Metro’s Line-2, specifically the 6.107 km Priority Corridor that will connect Malahi Pakri to New ISBT, passing through five elevated stations: Malahi Pakri, Khemni Chak, Bhootnath, Zero Mile, and New ISBT. This corridor will be the first section of the entire metro project to be operational, with its civil construction contract (Package PC-01) already awarded to NCC Ltd. in September 2020, under a 30-month deadline.

Financial Bid Results

DMRC had invited bids for the ballastless track installation contract with an estimated value of Rs. 24.89 crore and a 180-day completion timeline. The financial bids were opened in December 2024, and Rahee Infratech emerged as the lowest bidder, offering a bid of Rs. 23.97 crore, which is 3.67% below DMRC’s estimate. This makes Rahee Infratech the clear frontrunner for this vital contract, with a letter of award (LOA) expected to be issued in the coming weeks, potentially as soon as next week.

Bidders

  • Rahee Infratech Ltd: ₹23.97 crore (L1)
  • Texmaco Rail and Engineering Ltd: ₹25.82 crore (L2)
  • Paras Railtech Pvt. Ltd.: ₹26.92 crore (L3)
  • Apurvakriti Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd: ₹28.52 crore (L4)

The scope of this contract includes the installation of ballastless track, along with the supply of buffer stops and other necessary components for the Priority Corridor of Patna Metro.

Overview of Patna Metro Phase 1 Track Packages

This win marks Rahee Infratech’s involvement in the fourth track-related package for Patna Metro Phase 1. Here’s a quick summary of the status of all four track-related packages so far:

  • PT-4R: Design, manufacturing & supply of UIC-60 turnouts & scissor crossover – Awarded to Voestalpine VAE VKN India
  • PT-7R: Manufacturing & supply of 1200 MT 90 UTS, UIC 60, 13 m, Class A 880 Grade Rails for New ISBT Patna Depot – Awarded to Steel Authority of India (SAIL)
  • PT-8R: Standard gauge track work at New ISBT Depot (ballasted, embedded, and column lines) – Awarded to S.C. Agarwal
  • PT-09: Ballastless track installation for the Priority Corridor – Rahee Infratech is the lowest bidder (this post!)

Delays and Challenges Ahead for Patna Metro

While the track work is moving forward, there are still delays ahead for the full operation of the Priority Corridor. A crucial tender for the rolling stock and signaling systems is still pending, which could severely delay the opening of the corridor. The delay is particularly concerning because the rolling stock is JICA-financed, and unless DMRC decides to lease trains or bring in trains from Delhi Metro, it is expected that commercial operations for Patna Metro won’t begin before 2027.

Despite these challenges, the project is progressing, with key contracts being awarded and the construction of critical infrastructure well underway. With Rahee Infratech now onboard for the ballastless track work, the completion of Phase 1’s Priority Corridor is another step closer, though the full operationalization of Patna Metro will require further steps and overcoming several obstacles in the coming years.

Rahee Infratech’s successful bid for the ballastless track work contract represents a significant milestone in the development of Patna Metro, but the road ahead remains challenging. The project’s future largely depends on the timely procurement of rolling stock and signaling systems, and the eventual integration of these elements into the metro network. However, with the award of multiple track-related contracts, Patna Metro’s first operational corridor is steadily taking shape.
