Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): Mumbai’s metro network expansion has taken a significant leap forward as the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) successfully completed Dynamic Behavior and Brake Performance Trials on Line 9 of the Mumbai Metro, which runs from Dahisar East to Kashigaon. This crucial testing phase was conducted on BEML-manufactured metro rakes, reaching a maximum test speed of 90 kmph under varied real-world configurations.
The achievement not only showcases the robustness of India’s indigenous metro manufacturing capabilities but also reinforces confidence in the safety, efficiency, and technological performance of the upcoming metro corridor. The trials mark a key step towards the commercial readiness of Line 9’s Phase 1, which includes four stations and is targeted for completion by end of 2025.
What adds further value to this development is the formal Appreciation Note received from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to the RDSO team — an acknowledgment of their precision, professionalism, and dedication to India’s growing urban mobility landscape.
“Every milestone in projects like Mumbai Metro Line 9 underscores how India is redefining mass transit for a better urban future,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “Successful trials like these reflect not just technical readiness but also inter-agency coordination and the growing trust in Indian rail technology and infrastructure.”
Line 9, part of the extended Andheri-CSIA-Dahisar-Mira Bhayandar route, spans 13.58 km (including 11.386 km elevated and 2.195 km underground) and will feature 8 stations. The corridor is being developed in two phases, with Phase 1 trial runs between Kashigaon and Dahisar East having commenced in May 2025.
A standout feature of Line 9 is its double-decker structure — a first for Mumbai — which supports both a flyover and metro track, enhancing urban space efficiency. The line promises seamless connectivity across multiple modes of transport:
Dahisar East will serve as a key interchange, connecting to Metro Line 7 (Andheri to Dahisar), Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to D.N. Nagar), the Western Express Highway, and Western Railway.
Miragaon station will provide future connectivity to Line 10 (Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk), making it a major transit hub.
Once operational, Mumbai Metro Line 9 is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters in the Mira-Bhayandar region while enhancing access to key commercial and institutional areas. The project is aligned with MMRDA’s long-term vision to create an integrated, multi-modal transport system across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The successful completion of RDSO’s testing sets the stage for the next stages in project execution — system integration, safety clearance, and ultimately, passenger services in late 2025.
