Ho Chi Minh City Metro, Vietnam (Metro Rail Today): The Management Authority for Urban Railways in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has officially announced the commencement of daily trial runs for the highly anticipated Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line. This significant milestone began on October 1, 2024, and will continue through October 17, 2024.
During this trial period, trains on the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien line will operate at intervals of every four minutes and thirty seconds. A dedicated team of 71 personnel will oversee the operations during each shift, with two shifts scheduled daily. This team includes train drivers, dispatchers at the control center, and station staff, all working together to ensure a smooth trial run.
To assess the system's robustness, the trial will cover 47 different operational scenarios. These scenarios range from standard operations to various emergencies, including fire outbreaks, explosions, power outages, flooding, and signal failures at various locations along the line. The trial will be executed in two phases, with the first phase overseen by Japanese NJPT consultants and the second phase managed by the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Company 1.
In addition to the trial runs, BVT System Safety Assessment Consultants—a collaboration between France's Bureau Veritas and Vietnam's TEDI—will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the emergency response procedures. This oversight aims to ensure that all staff members are proficiently trained to handle emergencies that may arise during regular operations.
The Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line stretches 19.7 kilometers, connecting District 1's iconic Ben Thanh market with the Long Thanh depot in Thu Duc City. It comprises three underground and 11 elevated stations, designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve public transportation in the bustling city.
Originally launched in 2012, the project has faced numerous delays, leading to increased costs, which have now exceeded VND 43.7 trillion (approximately US$1.71 billion). The line has a fleet of 17 modern trains, each capable of carrying up to 930 passengers, enhancing the commuting experience for residents and visitors alike.
As Ho Chi Minh City progresses with the trial runs, the successful implementation of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line is poised to revolutionize urban transport in the region, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient public transit system.
