Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Bangalore Metro’s expansion, Siemens – RVNL Joint Venture has secured the contract worth approximately ₹762 crore for the electrification of Phase 2A (ORR Line) and Phase 2B (Airport Line). This crucial contract, designated as EPC5-CC, was awarded by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) to facilitate the 57 km Blue Line’s operational readiness.
The contract encompasses the comprehensive engineering, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of the 750V DC Third Rail electrification system. This includes the installation of traction substations, auxiliary substations, and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system spanning the entire length of the line. The Blue Line will connect Silkboard to KR Puram and extend to Bengaluru International Airport, integrating seamlessly with the city’s major Outer Ring Road and national highway NH-44.
BMRCL initiated the bidding process for Package EPC5-CC in September 2023, attracting significant interest from industry players. The bidding phase concluded with Siemens – RVNL JV submitting the lowest bid during the financial evaluation in February 2024, outperforming competitors such as Linxon and Larsen & Toubro. The contract value, totaling ₹394,23,90,663.45 plus €41,119,535.00, reflects Siemens’ 70% stake in the joint venture with RVNL holding the remaining 30%.
Despite the protracted evaluation period, spanning four months from bid opening to contract award, Siemens – RVNL JV is now poised to commence the critical electrification work. The deployment of the Third Rail system is pivotal for powering BEML trains operating on the Blue Line, enhancing urban mobility and connectivity across Bangalore. With Phase 2A and Phase 2B expected to open sequentially, Phase 2A is projected for completion by Q2 2026 followed by Phase 2B in Q2 2027.
The electrification project includes advanced systems such as the 33 KV distribution network and SCADA integration, ensuring efficient power management and operational control. These enhancements are crucial for supporting the metro’s operational demands and future expansions in Bangalore’s burgeoning metropolitan area.
The award of the EPC5-CC contract to Siemens – RVNL JV underscores a significant stride in Bangalore Metro’s Phase 2A and 2B development. As Siemens leverages its expertise in electrification and project execution, stakeholders anticipate substantial advancements in metro infrastructure that will cater to the city’s growing commuter needs.
