Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards enhancing passenger safety and convenience, Singapore's ST Engineering Urban Solutions Ltd. has clinched the Platform Screen Door (PSD) contract for Chennai Metro Line-3 and Line-5. Awarded by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) in November, this contract, known as Package ASA12A, is a crucial component of the ongoing 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project.
The Chennai Metro Phase 2 project envisions two under-construction lines covering a substantial distance of 116.1 km in a north-south orientation. Line 3, spanning 45.4 km from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, and Line 5, stretching 44.6 km from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, will integrate elevated and underground stations to efficiently connect key locations in the city.
The awarded contract focuses on the installation of half-height Platform Screen Doors at all elevated stations along these lines. The primary objectives are to enhance passenger safety and prevent incidents such as suicides and accidents during passenger movement. The implementation of PSDs reflects a commitment to elevating the overall travel experience for commuters.
ST Engineering's contract encompasses Line-3's 10 elevated stations between Sholinganallur Lake and SIPCOT 2, previously awarded to RVNL in January 2023. Additionally, it covers Line-5's 29 elevated stations between Grain Market and Elcot, currently under construction by HCC – KEC JV and Larsen & Toubro.
The total value of the contract, including taxes and duties, stands at approximately Rs. 159.97 crore, comprising INR 108.85 crore and USD 6.24 million.
CMRL awarded the contract to ST Engineering after two rounds of bidding. Notably, ST Engineering was the sole bidder when CMRL opened technical bids for the original tender in February 2023, followed by a re-tender in August 2023.
The contract entails the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of Platform Screen Doors for Corridor 3 (Sholinganallur Lake to Sipcot 2) and Corridor 5 (Grain Market to Elcot) of the Chennai Metro Phase 2 Project.
CMRL has another active tender (Package ASA09) for PSDs on Line-3's Nehru Nagar – Sholinganallur section and Line-5's Assissi Nagar – Koyambedu section. Bids for this tender are slated to open on December 27, adding another layer of anticipation to the project's progress.
ST Engineering's successful bid and subsequent contract award for the Platform Screen Door installation underscore the commitment to safety and efficiency in Chennai's expanding metro network. As the Chennai Metro Phase 2 project continues to unfold, these developments promise a more secure and streamlined commuting experience for the city's residents.
