SYSTRA appointed Design Consultant for Patna Metro Underground Corridors

Patna, India (Metro Rail Today): Global engineering and consultancy major SYSTRA has secured new detailed design consultancy assignments for critical underground sections of the Patna Metro Rail Project, further reinforcing its long-term involvement in India’s fast-expanding urban transit sector. The contracts come at a time when Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL) is intensifying site inspections and review mechanisms to maintain construction momentum and ensure timely delivery.

The latest win builds on SYSTRA’s earlier role in simulation studies and detailed design consultancy for the Patna Metro, reaffirming the confidence of Indian authorities and project partners in the company’s technical capabilities and local expertise.

Scope of New Design Assignments

Under the new mandate, SYSTRA will work with Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) on behalf of PMRCL for two major underground packages of Line 1 (Red Line):

  • Package PC-05: ~5.5 km

  • Package PC-06: ~4.9 km

These sections will connect Mithapur Ramp to Rukanpura Ramp through twin underground tunnels and six underground stations. SYSTRA’s responsibilities include the complete design of all six stations, entry and exit structures, and associated facilities such as ancillary buildings.

The underground corridor is regarded as one of the most technically complex portions of the Patna Metro due to dense urban development and challenging construction conditions, making precise and robust engineering essential.

Building on Proven Experience

SYSTRA’s continued engagement highlights its growing role as a trusted partner in India’s metro expansion programme. Leveraging global best practices and adapting them to Indian standards and local geotechnical conditions, the firm brings continuity and technical depth to the project.

Patna, with a population of nearly 2.5 million, is among India’s fastest-growing cities. The metro project is envisioned as a high-capacity, sustainable mobility solution aimed at easing congestion, cutting emissions, and significantly improving daily commuting.

Sustainability and Multimodal Integration

The Red Line will traverse the city’s dense urban core, enabling seamless integration with railway stations and the Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT). This multimodal connectivity is expected to reduce reliance on private vehicles, shorten travel times, and improve overall urban livability.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The Patna Metro is a landmark project for Bihar’s urban transformation, and underground sections demand the highest level of engineering precision. SYSTRA’s continued involvement reflects the importance of design continuity and global expertise in delivering safe, efficient metro systems. With strong institutional oversight from PMRCL, the project is well-positioned to set new benchmarks in sustainable urban mobility for emerging Indian cities.”

Strong Institutional Oversight

Alongside consultancy progress, PMRCL is maintaining close supervision of on-ground execution. Shri Sandeep Kumar R. Pudkalkatti, Secretary, Urban Development and Housing Department and MD, PMRCL, has conducted multiple site inspections and review meetings at key locations including Mithapur, Jaganpura and Ramkrishna Nagar, emphasizing adherence to timelines, safety and quality benchmarks.

Regular coordination meetings involving PMRCL officials and the DMRC team are also focusing on construction progress, systems integration and operational readiness, ensuring alignment across all project verticals.

With SYSTRA’s new design assignments and sustained monitoring by PMRCL, the Patna Metro is steadily advancing toward its goal of delivering a modern, integrated and environmentally responsible mass transit system—one that will reshape mobility and support long-term urban growth in Bihar’s capital.
