How Do Contractors Make Sure There’s No Flooding While Building Subways?
Taichung, Taiwan (Metro Rail Today): The Taichung City Government’s MRT Engineering Bureau has officially awarded contracts for the much-anticipated MRT Blue Line, a major public transportation initiative that promises to transform the city’s mobility landscape. The winning consortium consists of:
ST Engineering ($1.09b)
Alstom Transport ($181m)
CTCI Corporation ($272m)
Hyundai Rotem Company ($288.7m)
The MRT Blue Line will span 24.78 kilometers, connecting key areas across Taichung. Starting from Taichung Port in the west, the line will pass through Shalu City, the City Government, and Taichung Station, before reaching Xinjian Guo Market in the East District, near the intersection of Jinde Road and Leye Road.
Total Length: 24.78 kilometers
Elevated Sections: 10.30 kilometers
Underground Sections: 14.48 kilometers
Stations: 20 stations, with 8 elevated and 12 underground
Infrastructure: Two BSS system substations and a fifth-level engine factory
With construction expected to reduce traffic congestion along Taiwan Boulevard, the MRT Blue Line is designed to provide a much-needed alternative for commuters. Once completed, the metro system will also drive balanced development across the Greater Taichung region, connecting communities and improving access to key destinations.
This milestone follows the approval of the project by Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications in January 2024. The MRT Blue Line is seen as a critical piece of Taichung’s broader efforts to enhance its public transportation network, making travel more efficient and accessible for residents.
Easing Traffic Congestion: The new line will alleviate heavy traffic on Taiwan Boulevard, offering commuters a faster and more reliable option.
Fostering Balanced Growth: The project is expected to stimulate economic growth and urban development, particularly in underserved areas, while enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
Seamless Connectivity: As part of Taichung's strategy for a more integrated public transportation system, the MRT Blue Line will provide smoother connections across the city.
The project is now entering its detailed design and engineering phase, with construction set to begin soon. The consortium’s expertise and resources are expected to ensure the timely delivery of the MRT Blue Line, a key development that will reshape Taichung’s transportation landscape for years to come.
