TBM Nana achieves its fourth Tunnel Breakthrough for Kanpur Metro Rail Project

Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): The Kanpur Metro project is making significant progress in the construction of the underground section from Chunniganj to Nayaganj. The 'Nana' Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has successfully completed its fourth and final breakthrough at Chunniganj Metro Station.

The 'Up-line' tunnel, approximately 420 meters long, was constructed from MacRobertganj to Chunniganj Station. After completing nearly 420 meters of tunnel construction, the 'Nana' TBM reached Chunniganj Metro Station, achieving its fourth and final breakthrough. With this, the construction work on the 'Up-line' tunnel for the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section is now complete.

The 'Nana' TBM began its journey in December 2023, launching from the MacRobertganj launching shaft to construct the tunnel on the 'Up-line' from Chunniganj to Nayaganj Metro Station. The machine installed a total of 300 rings during its course. This breakthrough was celebrated in the presence of senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) and other contracting agencies.

It's worth noting that both 'Nana' and 'Tatya' TBMs had already completed tunnel construction in the 'Up-line' and 'Down-line' from Chunniganj Metro Station to Nayaganj Metro Station. The approximately 420-meter-long tunnel from MacRobertganj to Chunniganj is the final tunnel for this section, and the Kanpur Metro train will enter the underground section through this tunnel after Moti Jheel.

The Managing Director of UPMRC, Sushil Kumar, congratulated the entire team on this achievement. He mentioned that completing the tunnel construction work on the 'Up-line' from MacRobertganj to Chunniganj Metro Station in the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section is a significant milestone for UPMRC. The construction of both the approximately 8.6 km long underground sections in Kanpur Metro involves the use of four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).

The construction is progressing efficiently to save time, not only on tunnel construction but also on the construction of stations and system installations. Various departments are coordinating and cooperating to commence track, traction, signaling, E&M, etc., related works. The timely completion of the priority corridor indicates that future corridors will also be completed within the specified timeframe.

Details of the 'Nana' TBM's journey:

  • Launched on July 4, 2022, from Bada Chauraha Metro Station towards Nayaganj.
  • Achieved its first breakthrough on December 6, 2022, at Nayaganj Metro Station.
  • Retrieved from the retrieval shaft at Nayaganj Metro Station, it was launched at the launching shaft near Chunniganj Metro Station in March 2023.
  • Launched for Bada Chauraha in July 2023 after being positioned using a dragging system at Nayaganj Metro Station.
  • Achieved its third breakthrough on September 10, 2023, at Bada Chauraha.

The Kanpur Metro Rail project is progressing rapidly not only in the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section but also in the Central Transport Nagar underground section and the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section.
